Effective succession planning starts with strong people practices.

How are future leaders being developed today? Do managers have a shared understanding of what “ready” looks like? Do employees know what growth looks like within the organization?

We wanted to dig deeper into these questions, so we invited Sydney Hara, Senior HR + Talent Specialist, and Siobhan O’Beirne, HR & DEI Program Manager, from Envol Strategies to share what they’re seeing firsthand across growing organizations.

Their perspectives reinforce an important idea: leadership readiness is built over time through the feedback, development opportunities, career conversations, and talent decisions happening every day. 🙂‍↕️

Grab a coffee & check out our latest blog for their insights on the people practices that help build stronger leadership benches over time.

Summer may be winding down, but succession planning doesn't have an off-season. ☀️

Over the past several weeks, we've explored 8 best practices for building a stronger succession planning process through our series.

While each best practice focused on a different aspect of succession planning, they all point to the same idea:

Succession planning isn't a one-and-done exercise. It requires intentional, ongoing investment.

As Q4 planning begins (and 2027 gets closer than many of us would like to admit), now is a good time to ask:

How well does your succession plan reflect the organization you're building? 💭

Swipe through for a recap of the 8 best practices. ➡️

And if you're exploring ways to strengthen your succession planning process, we'd be happy to help.

A succession plan can check the compliance box. But does it tell you who’s actually ready?

In our latest Succession Spotlight, we spoke with Brittney Campbell, AVP of Total Rewards & HRIS at Sunmark Credit Union, about how the organization evolved from a largely manual 9-Box process to a more structured, organization-wide approach to succession planning.

The result is a process that supports National Credit Union Administration expectations while strengthening leadership readiness and employee development. 🙌

Sunmark’s journey is a great example of what becomes possible when succession planning moves beyond identifying names and starts creating a clearer picture of the talent, skills, and readiness already within an organization.

Thanks again to Brittney and the Sunmark Credit Union team for sharing their approach! 👏

Organizations are always evolving.

Succession plans should too.

A succession plan captures a moment in time. The challenge is that people, roles, and business needs rarely stay the same for long.

Regular review helps ensure succession plans continue to reflect the organization they're designed to support.

💡 This is one of the biggest reasons organizations outgrow spreadsheets. Succession planning isn't static, and the process becomes much harder to manage when every update lives in a document.

Manufacturing is facing a leadership challenge that isn't going away anytime soon. 💡

📊 In the U.S. alone, manufacturers may need 3.8 million new employees by 2033, with as many as 1.9 million roles potentially going unfilled.

When a key role leaves unexpectedly, the impact reaches far beyond a single position. Decisions slow down, institutional knowledge walks out the door, and production can feel the effects almost immediately.

That's why we're seeing more manufacturing organizations treat succession planning as part of their operational strategy to better protect business continuity.

A succession plan can identify future leaders.

A conversation can help create them.

Career discussions, development planning, and clear expectations all play a role in preparing employees for future opportunities.

Talent data tells you about your people. It doesn't tell you whether your business is prepared for a leadership transition.

That's because knowing who your high performers are isn't the same as knowing who could step into your most critical roles when it matters most.

Read our latest blog to learn why talent data is only the foundation and what it takes to build true leadership readiness.
