New article is up at www.openscene.live talking about what it means to be punk in a small city DIY scene. Using a lot of inspiration from folks like Double Lunch Productions and Get Well Booking, as well as reflecting on 25 years as a punk who cares about the community and scene here in Unama'ki-Cape Breton, I talk about the principles that make a DIY scene resilient and longevity. Check it out and maybe consider a subscribe to our substack so I can share articles, music, and other stuff about DIY music, scene history, shows, and design.

We're named Open Scene from the Closet Monster song, "Open Scene, Open Arms: Your Application is Denied." The premise is that there is no application process to be part of the DIY scene; that every person who drops their admission fee has equal right to be part of the scene.

When you gatekeep and make different rules for different people, then it's no longer a safe space. It's no longer a scene of equals. It's a false meritocracy that is determined by cliques. That's not punk. That's high school. The place most of us hated for that very reason.

People are not just one thing. They have dramatic potential to do great things, as well as awful things. They also have incredible ability to grow, change, and redeem themselves for their past indiscretions. Allow people to become the best version of themselves and leave behind the versions of themself they are not proud of. Embrace and celebrate each other's successes, instead of cementing reputations on mistakes they've taken responsibility for and are working to correct.

We are canceling the show on June 6 at Pickle Park. After the past few days, we realize there are some drastic differences in values between us that are involved. No hate, just differences. When these values are uncompromising, then there is no middle ground to find. So we move on. Thanks to .punch14 .theunderground for being part.

Hey jerkweeds. Some of the local rigs from the 'hood are taking over Pickle Park (Brookdale St. Park, Whitney Pier) this June for a punk rock party! For pets! We've got a bunch of the b'ys from north of Broadway and some fresh faces hitting the stage, and we'll be taking donations to support the Nova Scotia SPCA - Cape Breton Shelter just up the hill! Exclamation point!

Under the Underground, Slapdash Records, and Open Scene Archive Studio are the hook up for this shindig featuring revered nuisances Dazed, geriatric punks FRiGGED, young rippers Suker Punch, and our fav folksters John and Bob Gill. DJ Heavy Garbage will be on the 1s and 2s spinning the raddest punk rock tracks, and we'll have all sorts of games, activities, and surprises in store.

AND IT'S FREE! So pick up a donation for the Nova Scotia SPCA - Cape Breton Shelter, pack up your pupper (and the whole fam, I guess), and meet us at the Brookdale St Park (Pickle Park) on June 6th. Maybe Gina will let us all swim in her pool afterwards eh Dylan?

OH S**T! Thanks to Mark Sparrow for the heads up that Gob's entire 1999 show from St Annes Hall in Glace Bay is on YouTube! Such a trip to watch a packed house crowd surfing and ripping along with these rad bands! At our age, we need a nap after even considering this kind of foolishness.

Let's do this again this Summer when Open Scene presents GOB at the Capri on July 10. Tickets are on sale NOW at www.openscene.live for $45 plus tax and fees. Grab 'em for yourself, your 19 year old kid, your mom who was a cool 30 something year old in the 90s, your neighbour who is secretly a huge punk, and that weird guy who hung out in the Oasis at the dirt mall selling single cigs back in the day. That guy really needs to see a good show these days.

It's been a really rad few days hearing stories from folks who saw Gob here in Cape Breton back in the day. Wild stories of times had at St. Annes Hall (first photo - Douglas from the UK from that show) and The Locus (second photo - Ten Foot Pole from that show), now (was Pierre from Simple Plan still in Reset in those days?), reminiscing about the Gobblefest 7 show with The Weakerthans and Nothing to Say, and the Savoy Theatre show alongside . Makes you wish CBLocals.com was still ripping so we could be sharing pics and NSFW stories all day long as we get ready for Open Scene presents GOB at the Capri on July 10.

So what's your story? Are you like me and remember seeing the video for Soda on MuchMusic in the mid-90s? Did you get to the all ages shows 25 years ago? Did you hear them while playing NHL 2002-2004? Are you a latecomer that heard of them after Tom joined Sum 41?

Regardless of how you heard them, it's time to get pumped for this Summer! Grab your tickets now at www.openscene.live and help us spread the word by sharing with everyone you know so we can keep bringing rad bands back to the Cape.
