One thing I’ve learned is that one of the few constants in this life is loss.
Loss is something every one of us will experience, yet it’s still one of the hardest things to talk about, navigate and understand. It’s confusing. It’s heartbreaking. And sometimes, the circumstances surrounding a loss can leave us with even more questions than answers.
Sometimes we struggle to know what to say or what to do for someone who is right in the thick of it.
Because how on earth do we find the words that could possibly take away their hurt?
We can’t.
But one thing we can do, and something humans have done forever, is show love through creating, making, cooking, feeding, helping… simply doing something tangible to let someone know, “I’m here. I love you. I’m thinking of you.”
For me, one of the ways I can show that love is through sewing.
There has been some sudden and unexpected loss recently in the lives of people I know, including news today, someone very close to me losing her husband. The shock, the pain, and the sheer attempt to wrap our heads around the how, the why and the how do we move forward from this? can feel utterly impossible.
It’s a huge part of why I came back to sewing after being away from it for “sew” many years.
Sewing healed something in me. It gave my hands something to do when my heart and my head didn’t know what to do. It helped me work through one of the hardest seasons of my life.
And I’m learning that sometimes, it can help others in unexpected ways too.
I have gone back and forth sharing this type of service online for the last few week until today. If it can bring some comfort to those who are suffering then I believe it’s a service I should share. It’s delicate, but also has the potential to be so healing and helpful.
Recently, I was asked to create a couple of pillows for a sweet momma who experienced the devastating loss of the love of her life — her husband.
We took two of his favourite shirts, shirts he wore often, and turned them into beautiful memorial pillows.
Something she can hold onto.
Something she can hold close.
Something made from something that was his, so she can keep a little piece of him right where she needs him. 🤍
And it got me thinking about all of the beautiful ways we can preserve pieces of someone we love.
✨ Memorial pillows made from their favourite shirts
✨ A special bag made from a favourite tapestry or meaningful textile
✨ A travel bag made from their jeans or canvas jacket
✨ Memory stuffies made from sweaters or other well-loved clothing
✨ A stuffy or keepsake incorporating a small vial of ashes, where appropriate
✨ Christmas stockings made from their clothing
✨ And one of my favourites — taking their shirts and turning them into quilt blocks, creating a beautiful cuddle quilt filled with memories
These aren’t just sewing projects.
They are pieces of a person’s story.
The shirt they always wore.
The jeans you remember them in.
The sweater that still feels like them.
The fabric that has been sitting in a closet because you just couldn’t bring yourself to let it go.
Sometimes we aren’t ready to let go of the things because the things still feel like a little bit of them.
And maybe we don’t have to.
If you know someone who is navigating a difficult loss and you think a memorial pillow, stuffy, stocking, bag or quilt might bring them some comfort, please reach out.
I would be honoured to help turn something meaningful into something they can hold onto for years to come. 🤍
Because sometimes, when there simply aren’t words…
we can make something instead.
Warmly,
