Why Are Diesel Engines Harder to Start in the Cold? ❄️

Starting a diesel engine requires heat generated through compression, and cold weather makes several parts of that process more difficult.

🔋 Battery performance can decrease
🛢️ Engine oil becomes more resistant to flow
🔥 The engine starts from a much colder temperature
⛽ Fuel characteristics can also change as temperatures fall

Each factor makes the engine work a little harder during startup. Combine them and that first cold morning can expose weaknesses that weren't noticeable during warmer weather.

Some puzzles have thousands of pieces 🧩

Ours have pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, bearings, and a whole lot of bolts! 🔩

This week in the DSG shop, our technicians have quite the puzzle laid out in front of them as they work through a diesel engine overhaul.

Like the puzzle on your kitchen table, every single piece needs to go back exactly where it belongs, but ours with the right measurements, clearances, and torque specifications.

It's a job that takes patience, precision, and plenty of mechanical know-how.

Fortunately, putting these puzzles back together is what our team does best! 💪

Stay tuned as the pieces come together and this engine gets one step closer to running again!

❄️ What Happens to Diesel Fuel When Temperatures Drop Overnight? ❄️

A cool fall night can begin changing the way diesel fuel behaves even before true winter temperatures arrive.

As diesel approaches its cloud point, naturally occurring paraffin wax can begin to crystallize. This is what gives the fuel its cloudy appearance.

As temperatures continue to fall, those wax crystals can accumulate on fuel filters and begin restricting fuel flow.
