The increasing pe*******on of flexible services presents enormous challenges and opportunities as Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) transition into Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Our collaboration with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks in Project MERLIN is paving the way for the move.

As a joint initiative between the governments of the UK and Canada, Project MERLIN is led by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks in partnership with Opus One Solutions and other parties. Opus One, as a key partner, deployed its GridOS® Analytics and GridOS® Markets tools to enable smarter grid planning which allows DSOs to engage with a wide-ranging flexibility portfolio and optimize the use of renewable energy.

Electric power systems around the world are undergoing an unprecedented transformation. Grid modernization has become a catch-all phrase to refer to changes needed in the power grid to accommodate all the rapid technological changes happening in the electric power system, particularly on the distribution and grid-edge sides. One of the most effective solutions in enabling grid modernization is- Integrate diverse Distributed Energy Resources using a management system to balance energy consumption, storage, and generation from renewable sources.

Funded by Natural Resources Canada, our collaboration with Bracebridge Generation Ltd. in Project Speedier, which leveraged our end-to-end Distribution Energy Management GridOS® Platform, demonstrated how we can assist the customers to modernize the Town of Parry Sound’s grid to resolve issues of service limitations, improve power accessibility during high-demand time frames, and facilitate its shift towards becoming one of Canada's first net-zero smart communities.

Today we announced a new pilot project in Ontario, funded through the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)'s Grid Innovation Fund. The project simulates a local and operational transactive energy market; taking part in the simulation are Toronto Hydro. Hydro Ottawa and Bracebridge Generation Ltd.

The collaboration between Opus One and the LDCs demonstrates a path to market access for DERs through energy system coordination. The marketplace developed through this project provides an opportunity for LDCs to empower their customer base to participate in energy transition while ensuring cost consciousness.

We are excited to lead this project. IESO’s leadership role in field testing the evolution of energy transition in Canada is welcome. Projects like these will enable customer choice, while keeping costs low for customers and ensuring that utilities are at the centre of the energy transition. This project builds Opus One’s work in enabling the energy transition in international markets including in the US, UK and Australia.
