Gaming laptop getting too hot to handle? Does it sound like a jet engine zooming off!

High-performance gaming systems generate a lot more heat than basic laptops. They also tend to have a dedicated cooling fan for both the CPU and GPU. Should either of these fans fail, or get plugged up with dirt and dust system over heating can result.

Signs of an overheating gaming laptop (or desktop) include load fan spin sounds, GPU artifacting, reduced performance and system shut downs. Worn out, or degraded thermal compounds and pads can make it worse.

Solutions include regular “blow outs” of the cooling vents, replacing defective cooling fans and repasting, or replacing thermal compound and pads. Failure to upkeep the system can lead to permanent damage.

At RescueTECH Regina we offer deep internal cleaning and thermal re-pasting to bring temperatures back under control. Often we can reduce system temperatures by 10 - 15 degrees by doing this.

Think deleted files can always be recovered? Think again. It isn’t so easy on modern SSDs. Thanks to TRIM technology, SSDs actively erase deleted data to maintain speed and efficiency. While that’s great for performance, it means data recovery is far less likely if something goes wrong. While it may still be possible, TRIM drive recovery specialty software and the results may not be as good as older traditional data recovery methods.

This is why performing and keeping regular backups of your data is so very important. If your drive fails or files are deleted, there may be no second chance.

At RescueTECH Regina, we recommend regular backup solutions to keep your important files safe before problems happen.

What is the latest version of Mac OS? Right now Apple is out with Mac OS 26. This updated version of Mac OS was released in 2025. When is the newest one coming out? Mac OS 27 should be released in September 2026.

What does this mean for you? Apple has been phasing out support for older Intel CPU systems, going instead with Apple Silicon CPU support. From what we have read Apple OS 27 will have NO support for Intel CPUs. So if you are running an older Macbook - Mac OS 26 is likely its final update.

Is it the end of the personal computer? Curious what you think. There are people out there that thinking owning a personal computer, be it a laptop, or anything with its own processing power will be a thing of the past. Instead you will rent processing power from billionaires like Jeff Bezos. This power would be accessed through devices, likely sold to you, or rented by the same billionaires.

With the increase in computer chip costs (due to data centres buying them up,) more and more computing power will be available for rent. All the while personal computing devices becoming less affordable to general consumers. This computing power, generated in data centres, would then be made available to people like you and us as a service. Kind of like an Amazon subscription.

Hmmmm. Not sure if we like this idea.
Will it happen? We're not so sure.

While data centres are able to process massive amounts of data, decades ago we used to have "data centres" that people would plug into "main frames" for processing power via work stations. Over time technology improved to what we have today. Personal computing devices in the palm of our hands.

Will personal computing devices become a thing of the past, or will it be the data centres that go the way of the IBM Mainframes of the 1970s?

What is TRIM on an SSD (Solid State Drive) and why should you care? 💾

TRIM is a feature that helps solid-state drives stay fast by clearing out data blocks that are no longer in use. Doing this improves performance and extends the life of your SSD but there’s a catch. Once TRIM clears deleted data, it’s often gone for good, making file recovery extremely difficult compared to older hard drives.

That’s why regular backups are critical. In the event you have drive issues, data recovery may not be able to recover your lost data. If your data matters, such as your pictures and important files, don’t rely on possible data recovery after. The best way to protect your data is to back it up in advance.

Does your computer sounds like a jet engine? If so, overheating might be the culprit. Loud fans often mean your system is struggling to cool itself due to internal dust or failing components. Over time this can over work the system and lead to greater problems. Other signs of over heating including system shut downs.

📱 Why Using Your Old Phone Longer Might Be Smarter Than Buying a New One Every Year

Upgrading every year may look exciting, but keeping your current phone longer can be one of the smartest decisions you make.

💰 Saves Money
New flagship phones can cost $1,000+ with financing payments added to your monthly bill. Even if it is "included" in your plan, that plan is financing the cost of the phone.

If your phone still works, keeping it means no upfront cost and more money staying in your pocket.

📉 Lower Monthly Expenses
Paid-off phones let you switch to cheaper prepaid or bring-your-own-phone plans, often saving hundreds each year or approximately $20 to $50 a month.

🔧 Cheaper Repairs, Less Hassle
Older phones are usually less expensive to repair, the parts are cheaper and often so are the accessoiries they use.

🌍 Better for the Environment
Every new phone requires mining rare materials, heavy manufacturing, and shipping. Reusing your current phone helps reduce e-waste, conserve resources, and lower carbon emissions.

♻️ Small Choice, Big Impact
Extending your phone’s life by even one extra year can make a real difference for both your wallet and the planet.

Sometimes the best upgrade… is not upgrading at all.

💧 Before You Upgrade Your Phone or Computer, Think About the Water Behind It

Something to think about before for rush out and buy the newest phone or computer...
Most people see the price tag of a new device. Few see the environmental cost hidden in its production.

📱 One smartphone can require 14,000 liters of water to manufacture.
💻 One laptop can require 190,000 liters of water to manufacture.

That’s an enormous amount of water used in mining, refining rare earth minerals, chip production, batteries, and manufacturing.

To put it in perspective:

📱 If you keep a smartphone for 3 years, that equals roughly 12 liters of water every single day over its lifespan just to cover manufacturing.

💻 If a laptop lasts 5 years, that works out to 100+ liters of water every day over those five years.

And that doesn’t even include the electricity to power it, data centers, cloud storage, or internet use.

🌍 Why keeping devices longer matters:
✔ Reduces demand for new mining and rare earth extraction
✔ Saves massive amounts of freshwater
✔ Cuts manufacturing emissions
✔ Reduces electronic waste
✔ Saves you money

Sometimes the greenest upgrade is the one you don’t make. At RescueTECH we are big fans of repair, reuse and recycle.
Use it longer. Repair it. Reuse it. Replace when necessary. Sure we like new things, just as much as the next person, but we can also wait another year or two.

🎮 PS5 HDMI Port Broken? Don’t Replace the Console Repair It. 🎮

At RescueTECH, we’ve been repairing gaming consoles for years, and one of the most common issues we see is damaged PS5 HDMI ports.

💰 Our HDMI port replacement: $200 + tax
🕹️ Cost of a new PS5: Around $750 - $800 + tax

When the HDMI port fails, repairing it usually makes far more sense than replacing the whole console.

Why do HDMI ports fail?

🔌 Physical Stress
Repeated plugging and unplugging wears the port down over time.

🔥 Excessive Heat
Heat can weaken solder joints and internal components.

🌫️ Dust Build - Up
Dust can clog the port and reduce airflow inside the system.

How to help prevent damage:

✅ Keep your console in one good location and leave it there
✅ Clean dust from vents and ports regularly
✅ Avoid constantly unplugging HDMI cables

Good news: HDMI ports are replaceable, and we do it all the time.
