It was our pleasure to welcome Laurent Jaffart, Director of Resilience, Navigation and Connectivity at the ESA - European Space Agency and Jean-Claude Piedboeuf, Senior Vice President, Space Programs at the Canadian Space Agency and the rest of the ESA/ CSA delegation to MPB Communications in Montreal.

Following discussions on next-generation optical connectivity in space—and building on our successful collaborations with ESA and CSA in advancing cutting-edge optical amplifier technologies—we were proud to present our fully operational, serial production line purpose-built for space-grade optical amplifiers.

With high-volume manufacturing already running at scale for our 5W amplifier/ preamplifier platform, we are now accelerating the transition of our next-generation optical amplifier technologies from advanced research to full-scale deployment. This progression will play a critical role in enabling high-capacity, multiwavelength, multi-orbit satellite systems.

We recognize and commend the forward-looking vision and sustained commitment of ESA and CSA in driving innovation, helping to shape the future of secure, resilient, and high-performance satellite communication networks.

MPBC at L4AO & AO4ELT in Chile! 🇨🇱

Last week, MPBC, in collaboration with LEOS and with the support of Microgate, took part in two major adaptive optics events in Chile: and .

LEOS’ Simone Serafini and MPBC's own, Daoping Wei, gave a presentation during L4AO, titled: “Novel Raman Fiber Amplifier (RFA) Based High-Power 589 nm Guide Star Laser for Large Astronomical Telescopes and Optical Ground Stations.” This effort highlights LEOS' novel non-resonant frequency doubling approach combined with MPBC's established high-power RFA, establishing a new paradigm for high-power 589 nm guide star laser for large astronomical telescopes, featuring patented remote pumping, high conversion efficiency, with reduced complexity, further improving reliability.

During the visit to Chile, our team had the privilege of visiting the Gemini South and SOR Astronomical Observatories. We’d like to thank the European Southern Observatory for organizing and making this trip possible. 🏔️🔭

Together, MPBC and LEOS, with Microgate’s support, are pioneering this new approach to Guide Star Laser design, advancing performance and reliability for astronomical and space-based adaptive optics systems.

From MHz to GHz — A New Era in Ultrafast Fiber Lasers

MPBC is excited to introduce the UFL-Pico GHz Seeders, our latest breakthrough in ultrafast laser technology.

Operating in the 1020–1080 nm range, these mode-locked fiber lasers generate picosecond pulses in polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber, with nearly transform-limited or broadband options and a fixed repetition rate of 1.1–1.2 GHz.

These lasers combine exceptional beam quality with GHz-rate pulse trains, making them ideal for systems that demand higher repetition rates, smoother power scaling, and reduced pulse energy fluctuations.

With M² < 1.1 beam quality, self-start in under 5 seconds, and an all-fiber, maintenance-free design, the UFL-Pico GHz Seeders deliver reliable, high-speed performance for advanced applications such as:

⚙️ Frequency combs
⚙️ Spectroscopy
⚙️ Nonlinear optics
⚙️ Precision material processing

We were honored to welcome the President of the Canadian Space Agency, Lisa Campbell, along with her delegation, to our Montreal headquarters this past Friday, September 19, 2025. During their visit, we had the opportunity to showcase our legacy in fiber lasers and optical amplifiers, along with a tour of our clean rooms featuring our production line for space amplifiers and labs.

Over the years, the CSA has supported us through many projects and programs, most recently with the ESA - European Space Agency for the development of a 100 W optical amplifier for spaceborne use and a 1000 W optical amplifier for ground stations.

This visit highlighted the strength of our collaboration and our shared commitment to advancing Canadian excellence in space photonics.

We thank Lisa Campbell for the time she spent with us and her inspiring interactions with our team.
