It’s been a while guys. Took a step back from editing until I had my space ready for it. Maybe it will be a separate episode on the subject actually. Recently I started to drip stuff into Patreon will be uploading weekly to YouTube as well. In the past I always felt like I need post more, more videos, more editing, and yes that is in fact probably the most important thing in this job (at least from where I see it). However, I was not giving myself a realistic perception of time. I don’t think I hit a point of burnout, but I definitely started to look at it as a chore and not the thing of passion . We only have 24 fu***ng hours in a day. With that I’ll be taking less ambitious bites and try to stay on this pace. I think 1 video a week is totally reasonable.

This one was a bit of a rare case.

The issue ended up being a failed preamp, which isn’t something we see all the time. The drive is an older Samsung, so it made things a little more interesting. We actually had the exact donor for it, so initially the plan was a straightforward head swap.

That didn’t work.

Even though the preamps matched, the drive just wouldn’t accept the donor head assembly. At that point, instead of pushing further down that path, I decided to try something different — transferring the donor preamp onto the original head assembly.

That’s what brought the drive back.

Once the original heads came back to life, we were able to get full access and complete the data recovery.

On top of that, the drive also had issues with the original logic board, which we handled in-house as well.

Cases like this are a good reminder that even when everything looks like it should work on paper, sometimes you have to adapt and go a different route.
