A local client from Ottawa brought the Kingston DataTraveler DTSE9 into our data recovery lab after it stopped working. During our inspection, we found what appeared to be damaged traces near the USB connector. After carefully removing the protective coating, we were able to investigate the USB power and signal connections and determine what was happening.

Using a multimeter, external power connections, a PC-3000 USB adapter, and a DeepSpar USB Stabilizer, we were able to restore the required 1.8V and 3.3V power rails and successfully bring the Kingston flash drive back online.

Once the device was recognized, we accessed the partition and began imaging the flash drive. The drive contained just under 2GB of data, and the imaging process was progressing successfully.

This is a great example of why a USB flash drive that appears completely dead may still contain recoverable data. In some cases, the problem can be related to power delivery, damaged USB connections, PCB traces, or other electronic failures.
