While on camera - recording virtual sessions

Use calm, open body language. Sit up straight – poor posture is immediately obvious on camera. Keep your shoulders back and your muscles relaxed. Take deep breaths. Try not to cross your arms as this makes you look closed-off.

Smile, especially at the beginning of your session recording. It makes a huge difference in how friendly you seem.

Slow down slightly when you talk and make an effort to enunciate clearly. Speak from your diaphragm rather than your throat.

If you feel jittery, try using props to keep your hands occupied. Appearing nervous, fidgety, or uncomfortable on camera will distract viewers from your message.

Ensure your computer is on a stable platform. It can also be distracting for the viewer if your camera feed is constantly moving or wobbly.

Relax, it will help make capturing your presentation go as smoothly as possible.

Audio - how to get it right

The audio quality of the recording is actually more important than the video. Indistinct, noisy audio will be more of an issue to the viewer, making your presentation less intelligible and harder to follow than lower quality video.

In order to alleviate this issue, use a headset with a microphone to record the audio for your presentation. This will ensure clear audio and avoid any issues with room acoustics or noise encroachment.

If you don’t own a headset, try to get as close to your computer’s microphone as possible. Their ability to pick up your voice is far worse at a distance.

Here are some simple, effective ways to get good lighting for your session recording:

• If you have a window near your desk, the use of natural light is an excellent way to provide the illumination you need. It is best not to have a window directly behind you as you’ll appear silhouetted, leaving your face under-exposed. It’s best if the window is in front or to the side of you, without the sun shining directly on your face.

• If you don’t have a good source of natural light at your desk, place two similar light sources on either side of your desk, just in front of it. This will provide a nice flat light. Try to ensure the light sources, such as floor lamps, have a similar warm tone of light and are the same level of brightness.

• Try to avoid overhead lighting – it can cast unflattering shadows on your face. It’s best to keep the lighting simple and similar in tone or color temperature.

Here are some pointers for configuring your workspace to record a virtual session:

1. If your laptop is on your desk, it’s likely much too low to get a flattering angle when recording your face. Your camera is likely angled up at your face when the laptop is too low.

2. Raise it up – large books working well here – so the camera is roughly at eye level. Then, angle the camera slightly downwards to avoid giving viewers a glimpse up your nose, or the dreaded double chin effect.

3. Be deliberate about the background you use for recording. Nothing looks worse than a messy or distracting background. Clear clutter behind and around you, rearranging furniture and art if required. Basically, you’re trying to create a visually appealing backdrop.

4. Finally, frame your shot properly to make sure it’s visually interesting.
