IT equipment and network cabling doesn’t have to be messy or hard to understand. Up West Technologies recently cleaned up a client’s network infrastructure and cabling. The job included:

✔️ A documented network diagram showing each piece of equipment, how it’s connected, and how data flows through the network
✔️ Full labeling of all network jacks and cables
✔️ Moving equipment off an open shelf and into a properly mounted rack
✔️ Troubleshooting and fixing a long-standing intermittent network connection
✔️ A cleaner, more professional look
✔️ Room for growth as the business adds equipment

All of this results in a layout that’s easy to understand at a glance. When something needs attention, there’s no guesswork tracing cables or figuring out what plugs into what. Problems get found and fixed faster, and that means less downtime for the business.

We also put in a right-sized UPS battery backup. The site already had a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, but even the few seconds it takes the generator to kick in were enough to knock the equipment offline. Each time the power dropped, staff (and potentially customers) were left waiting 15–30 minutes for systems to restart and come back up. Now the network rides through the switchover without missing a beat, and business carries on as usual.

Start with the question: what are you actually trying to see?

If it's the front door - who dropped that parcel, who was knocking while you were out - one camera in the right spot does the job. It records to a card inside the camera and sends the alert to your phone.

If it's the whole property - the yard, the shop, the driveway, the equipment - that's a recorder and several cameras, all on one timeline you can scrub back through.

And if what you need to watch isn't near the house at all - a barn across the field, a shed at the far end of the lane, a second property down the road - we can get a signal out there too. Our wireless technologies can carry a camera feed a kilometre or more with line of sight, so the footage still lands on your recorder at home.

Are Bell Fiber customers in O'Leary (and possibly beyond) being riddled with intermittent Internet outages over the last 24 hours or so? I can't seem to find any planned maintenance or ongoing outage notifications in the area from Bell, but I've seen their trucks working on fiber lines on Main St.

Up West Technologies is a proud Canadian company - I think most if not all Canadian companies are. And like most Canadian companies, I find it pretty offensive to see tariffs on Canadian goods and services that go against agreements - not to mention any talk of the 51st state or other related nonsense. Because of this, I have made conscious decisions to align with companies of like-minded countries and regions wherever possible. What does this look like in principle? I use the following decision order when evaluating partners and providers:

1️⃣ Canadian company with the data in Canada
2️⃣ European company with the data in Canada
3️⃣ European company with the data in Europe
4️⃣ Alternative country’s company with the data in Canada or Europe

These are not the only data points, but they are important ones. It’s impossible as a service provider to completely ignore the Microsofts, the Googles, the Amazons of the world - I love alternative or open-source as much as the next person, but it doesn’t make sense to recommend moving away from software that everyone already knows. (The irony of posting this on a US company website isn't lost on me lol)

25+ years in the business, and I still feel like a kid at Christmas when new hardware for a client deployment comes in. This hardware is for an upcoming deployment that will provide full wireless coverage for a client - Internet, WiFi calling, WiFi messaging, etc - for their home, detached garage and a barn across the road. 1 Internet service, 10,000+ sq feet of seamless wireless coverage

Made by a European company, and engineered to run continuously for a decade or two without failure. This hardware is relied upon by enterprise networks and ISPs worldwide, but still comes in at an affordable price point - it can pay for itself quickly if you are shelling out money for a second Internet connection today at that building a few hundred or few kilometers away - and you still maintain high speeds.

I’ve heard stories from people who have had bad luck with wireless in the past. When it’s done with the right hardware, installed by experienced individuals, it just simply works and you stop thinking about it.
