Specialty coffee is rushing into private-label roasting, but history (and psychology!) shows where this leads.
A recent Coffee Intelligence article questioned whether custom roasting builds brand equity or just turns roasters into manufacturers. Earlier, the same publication warned that specialty coffee is repeating the mistakes of microbreweries—a sector now facing a "steep market correction."
Because when every venue offers a "unique" physical product, the novelty wears off fast. The product commoditizes.
What doesn't wear off is identity alignment. Indeed, identity drivers—core personal values—are what truly draw patrons to their preferred venues.
Millennial patrons don't build habits around custom packaging—they choose third places that mirror their personal values, lifestyle, and sense of community. Coffee is an environment-driven habit; the physical venue is where personal identity meets social space. It is very much about finding one’s Third Place.
Instead of chasing fleeting product differentiation, forward-thinking venues are focusing on true customer alignment. The commercial result is immediate: higher retention and organic advocacy.
Personal values remain constant—whether someone is at a café, in the office, or at home. In an established venue, the atmosphere is defined by the operator—owner, manager, or leader—not the product label. This worldview is reinforced daily by staff and regulars, or embodied by the wider community sharing that same culture.
That is why "change initiatives" fail too often: they do not fit into an established culture, whether in a coffee shop, a corporate office, or any space where people have to coexist.
And that is exactly why we built Truvtus—the values-alignment app designed to connect conscious patrons directly with third places that match who they are.
