Stan Pavlovsky the Shutterstock CEO has written an article for AdWeek about how they decided to handle the pandemic. For them it meant offering flexibility for employees. As they’ve stated, flexible work will allow them to reach more potential employees as well as improve the well-being for current employees. We agree with Shutterstock, offering flexibility and changing the way you work will help better the workplace for everyone, not just at one company. It offers the chance to create healthy competition amongst companies to better the quality of life for their employees. Better it as it pushes companies towards offering more thoughtful work benefits and hours that reflect the changed needs many have with the pandemic. As some might prefer working in the office and for others they may need the opportunity of working remotely. Alongside that, many potential employees who had to miss out on opportunities due to responsibilities now have the chance to apply.
We’re excited to see so many companies embracing flexibility.

With the pandemic many gains made in the gender gap in the workforce have been erased. As talked about by Korn Ferry’s editorial. More women than men worked part-time pre-pandemic, and on top of working mainly in the hardest hit industries, like hospitality, it shows the amount of work we need to do to fix this. As seen by Korn Ferry it’s at multiple levels, and women are still expected to do the majority of domestic work.
The way to help this issue is to emphasize flexibility, as well as focus on results and offer benefits. Offering benefits like childcare, that help lessen the load many women carry outside of work. Offering flexibility is especially a great way to help women to continue to work without having to stress about handling everything else at the same time.

It’s not just in pay that women are making less than men but in pension too. A survey found that during that the pension gap grew by 26000 euros more than the prior year. They found as well, that about one third of the women in the survey had their financial situation worsened. This might not be a surprise to some considering women have been the hardest by covid. Yet, what may not be as obvious is the long term effect on women this has. We need to look at the results and see the importance and urgency of these issues.
One way that might help is for companies to offer flexible work and different benefits. Despite the pre-pandemic stigma attached to flexibility, it offers more positives than presumed. Workers are just as productive and furthermore suffer from less burnout with flexibility. Offering it can help your employee trust your company.

Goldman Sachs has increased junior pay due to complaints about burnout. While this is great it’s disappointing to see that they are against flexibility once office returns are possible. Flexibility could also help complaints about burnout, gruelling hours can’t just be fixed by an increase in pay and weekends off. Flexibility allows for employees at any level to work around their own needs and can help with any work stress. We’ve seen that many, especially before the pandemic, have suffered from stress due to the traditional approach to work. Yet the pandemic has shown that you can be just as productive with flexibility and also reduce stress.
Let us know your thoughts on Goldman Sachs pay increase. Do you agree with us?

Financial Times' article highlights the importance of remember to focus not just on the amount you pay an employee but on the benefits too. With Covid many have found the benefit in a more flexible work, and companies need to take this into account when they look for employee retention. Offer your employees your trust by showing it's not about where or how they do their work but the quality.

Boards are looking to diversify, by including more women and minorities. Harvard Business interviewed board members around the world, to see what’s needed. They found five categories: financial, strategic, relational, role, and cultural. The key it seems is to be able to understand and express what’s needed strategically and financially for the business. As for the other three, that’s about making sure you fill a needed place on the board contributing to a welcoming environment that helps make relevant suggestions for the business.
What Harvard Business forgets to mention is why we need to diversify boards. Diversify to help companies reflect the changing needs of the working world. We need board members who remember to help employees get an equal footing and chance despite varying backgrounds. Equal footing by helping companies implement policies and goals; such as flexibility. Many women and minorities have lacked the chance at opportunities due to companies lacking more flexible work arrangements. Companies need to help employees meet their personal needs, whatever that may be, and board members have the chance to help implement that.

Forbes has written a great article about creating diversity in the workplace. Their first point of taking the time to do it right is exactly what accomplished wants to help companies do. Many women for example are the perfect fit for a company, but unfortunately many miss out on positions they would be perfect for. Especially at the executive level that still lacks diversity. Audit your company to figure out what you need and what you can offer to future employees. Another great point by Forbes relates to looking for diversity of thought. It’s a great way to describe looking for someone who can bring a different approach and background to your company. With their approach it allows you and them to thrive by learning from each other.

Covid-19 has caused many companies to alter what they offer as perks to employees. As flexibility has now become the norm it means different needs have to be met for employees. As reported by Forbes, employers have now started offering perks such as mental health outreach and work from home stipends. In fact around 43% of HR managers have added new perks, and 45% of companies offering mental health resources. It shows that the way we approach work and everything that surrounds it is different. It’s no longer about working around work but by striking a balance between work and everything else for the benefit of employees and employers.
If you’re a company wondering how to offer these types of perks, accomplished is here to help make that happen. Email us at [email protected]
