In New Brunswick, police no longer come for a gas-and-dash. Read that again.

As of April 2024, N.B. police stopped investigating fuel thefts from stations unless there is a threat to public safety (CBC / Canadian Press). Why? They received 5,200 fuel-theft complaints from 2020–2023 and the charge rate was too low to justify the response. Translation for a station owner: if someone drives off, you are on your own. No cruiser. No file.

That makes your camera the whole ballgame. It’s your only prevention AND your only evidence. For [gas station client], we installed LPR (licence-plate-reading) cameras at the pumps. Every plate is logged, and the moment a known offender pulls in, staff know before a drop of fuel is pumped. Repeat drive-offs stopped, and the ones who tried left solid plate evidence behind.
