Unpopular opinion: SEO isn't dying because of AI. It's just splitting into two jobs.

Ranking on Google used to be the whole game. In 2026, it's half of it.

The other half? Getting cited inside the answer — when someone asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Copilot a question in your industry, is your brand part of what they say back?

Semrush studied 50,000 brands across 1,094 topics in ChatGPT and found something interesting: winning one prompt doesn't mean much. Brands that show up consistently across a cluster of related questions are the ones building real authority.

Meanwhile, AI Overviews are showing up 71% more often in commercial searches — not just "what is X" queries, but the ones closer to a buying decision.

The fundamentals haven't changed. Keywords, technical SEO, content, backlinks — still the foundation. What's new is the layer on top: Search & AI Visibility.
