I haven’t posted in a while, but this is something I always tell parents when it comes to social media, online apps, and gaming platforms:
Have open, ongoing conversations with your kids — at any age — about online safety.
In the past three months alone, I’ve had several clients fall victim to scams, phishing attacks, and ransomware. These situations don’t just happen to “other people.” They can happen to anyone.
In this post, I’m sharing a link to an episode of The Shawn Ryan Show featuring a victim of abuse that occurred through Roblox, a popular online gaming platform. Roblox is installed on many of the computers and laptops I repair — it’s extremely common.
I strongly encourage you to watch this episode and reflect on your role as a parent when allowing your children to play online.
No amount of security software or supervision can guarantee 100% protection. However, consistent, honest conversations about what your kids are doing online can significantly reduce the risk of them becoming victims of scams, exploitation, or predators.
