Great insights last week from the Industry days with the government in Calgary, organized by the Canadian Meat Council.

Topics like inspection trends, regulatory, policy, and market updates reminded us how quickly the landscape evolves — and how important it is to stay connected.

David, our Paperless Forms Specialist, was there to listen, learn, and share these insights with the team to keep improving how we support food safety every day.

Our team has just returned from the Food Safety Consortium. As always, we had some great conversations focused on real industry challenges.

Here are a few key takeaways that stood out 👇

✔️A period of uncertainty

With many regulatory changes across the United States, keeping up can be overwhelming. The best approach is to focus on what the FDA and USDA require now. Keep an eye on what’s coming, take time to assess risks, and evaluate how to respond to those changes.

✔️Supplier relationships
Supplier relationships are often overlooked in food safety.
Work with suppliers you know and trust, those who care about quality, transparency, and compliance as much as you do. Prioritize consistency and reliability over price alone for long-term success.

✔️Food safety culture
Food safety culture starts with people. Real change happens when teams are truly committed. Consider investing in training, engaging them in key discussions, and giving them the freedom to take ownership and accountability.

——

🎤Two weeks ago, our team had the pleasure of attending the BRCGS Connect 2025 conferences.

It was a truly enriching experience, and we identified several key takeaways:

✔️ Food Safety Culture
Beyond compliance, it is clear that BRCGS is placing increasing emphasis on culture: leadership commitment, team involvement, and integration into day-to-day practices.

✔️ HACCP Plan
The Codex has updated its decision tree (the previous version was in 2023). The logic is now more rigorous, and hazard analysis must target not only specific pathogens and allergens, but also more specific risks such as radiological contaminants.

✔️ Allergens
In the United States, significant changes are underway: gluten has been added to the list, and the FDA is working with Belgium, Australia, and New Zealand to move toward global harmonization. The goal is to standardize allergen management practices and reduce discrepancies between countries. A public conference will be held on November 18–20, a key event to stay informed on these developments.

✔️ BRCGS Internal Audit
The BRCGS Standard requires that the internal audit be more thorough than the certification audit, and that it be conducted at least four times a year. This means auditing all departments (procedures, verifications, monitoring, etc.) and analyzing gaps in detail. But an important question arises: can the quality manager alone realistically carry out these four internal audits while also ensuring the competence of the company’s internal auditors, given the scope and complexity of the task?

✔️ FSMA 204
Digital solutions such as blockchain, RFID, or cloud platforms can drastically reduce recall times and improve data accuracy. Success relies on supplier collaboration, team training, and a gradual transition to digitalization, which has become a true competitive advantage for companies ready to embrace it.
