6:30am Lessons From a Competitor
A little while back, one of our office neighbours dropped in to say hello.
Now, technically speaking, he’s a competitor. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.
We got to chatting, and before long he threw out an invite: “Want to go for a ride tomorrow morning?”
“Sure,” I said. “Great, 6:30am.”
Fast forward to the next morning… while it would’ve been easy to sit at the breakfast table with coffee and scroll through emails and headlines, something told me that wasn’t the better choice.
So out we went.
Fresh air, quiet trails, no notifications. Just a couple of people on bikes, taking the harder way up the hill and enjoying the ride down.
What stood out most wasn’t just the ride, it was the conversation.
Sure, we talked a bit of shop. But mostly it was about business challenges, wins, and what it actually takes to build something sustainable.
It was a good reminder: When you strip away the labels of competitor, vendor, or partner, you’re just left with people trying to do good work.
And most people are pretty good.
At Cloud Systems, we spend a lot of time helping clients navigate complex decisions be it technology, security, or growth. But moments like this reinforce something equally important: Relationships and trust matter more than anything.
Even in competitive industries.
A few takeaways from an early morning I almost skipped:
- Competition doesn’t have to mean isolation: you can compete hard and still respect and even likethe people around you.
- Some of the best conversations don’t happen in boardrooms: they happen where there’s space to think clearly.
- Getting outside beats doom scrolling every time.
- Business is still human at its core: technology, strategies, and services all matter, but people matter more.
So here’s to early mornings, unexpected invites, and remembering that not every competitor has to feel like one.
And yes… turns out he’s a pretty good guy.
