Think about your favourite movie. You kept watching because you were rooting for the hero and wanted to know how their story ends.

Your customers work the same way. They're the hero of their own story — not your business. You’re the guide, helping the hero win.

That's a mindset shift for many business owners who assume their product or history is the star of the show. It isn't. Your customer and their problem are.

Explaining your own business is like being inside a jar trying to read the label.

You're immersed in your business every day. You know it inside out. That makes it harder to say clearly what makes you different.

It doesn't matter if you're a tradesperson, a drywaller, or run a personal service business. The deeper you're involved in your work, the harder it gets to put it into simple words.

Every business owner runs into this. You're not the only one struggling to say it simply.

Did you know two-thirds of garden tractor buying decisions are made by the spouse, not the person who actually uses the tractor?

That's a real finding from John Deere's own research. Marketing aimed only at the end user misses most buyers.

The same gap shows up constantly in B2B. The person who feels the problem often isn't the one who signs off on the purchase.

Before your next ad or post goes out, ask who's really making the call, not just who uses the product.

EDGE is taking part in Burman University's Small Business Week event, a free half-day for business owners working through the hiring and workforce changes happening right now.

CFA Charterholder, former University of Calgary Chancellor and CFL Hall of Famer Jon Cornish will be giving the keynote. There are workshops on the Central Alberta labour market and a Q&A panel with local experts. You'll also have time to network with other business owners. Breakfast is included.

Doing the work is one thing. Knowing it's working is another.

If you've claimed your Google Business Profile and cleaned up your website, here's how to check whether it's paying off:

• Google sends a monthly Business Profile summary. Scan it for website visits, phone call clicks, and impressions
• Google Search Console shows the actual terms people typed to find you
• Watch the trend month over month, not day to day
• Keep track of whether you're getting more calls and inquiries than you were

Local SEO is a marathon. Monitor your progress, but give it a couple months of consistent effort before you judge the results.

AI is answering more questions without anyone clicking through to a website. That has changed what showing up in search results looks like.

Robert's advice on the podcast was to start with your content.

Start by answering the four or five questions your customers commonly ask. Add a short summary at the top of your key pages. Keep your business details consistent across your website and everywhere else online. Those are the same pages AI tools pull from when they build an answer, and they'll often credit and link you for it.

When a client says their website "truly represents [their] company," that's music to our ears.

A big thank you to Mark G. at Northeast Precast for the kind words.

Your website is often the first impression people get of your business, so we build every custom site to show who you are, what makes your work stand out and, most importantly, how you solve your client's problem.

Ready for a website that fits both your business and your clientele? Let's talk.

Your Google Business Profile is the closest thing the internet has to a listing in a phone book, except it's free and you control it.

Business name. Phone number. Website. Hours. Photos. Services. Reviews. They’re all displayed on your Google Business Profile.

For many local searches, it's the first thing people see, before your website even shows up. If you've never claimed yours, Google may have already created one, and the details on it might be wrong.

Claiming it takes a few minutes. Keeping it accurate makes it work for you.
