Girl Geek Dinners Waterloo Region

Girl Geek Dinners Waterloo Region We provide a fun, casual, educational – and tasty – community for the geek-minded of all stripes in the Region.

Girl Geek Dinners were founded by Sarah Lamb in London, UK in 2005, to help promote women working in tech. As a result of her frustration being the only woman at tech events, and being assumed to be a marketing person, today there are 64 chapters in 23 countries, including several in Canada: Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, Edmonton, and Vancouver. The goal of Girl Geek Dinners KW is

to provide fun, welcoming events where all types of people in tech — from students just figuring out their interests to those with well-established careers — though primarily women, can come together, meet ‘n’ greet, learn, network, talk tech, and have a great time. The first KW Girl Geek Dinner took place on May 12, 2011, at the Google Waterloo office, with Ruth Morton from Microsoft speaking on Cloud Computing. Since then we’ve had a variety of speakers on STEM topics (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), from professors to CEOs, engineers to community managers. We have also been fortunate to receive support from a number of local organizations, including Communitech, Google, and the University of Waterloo. We embrace the Girl Geeks Mission Statement:

- To break down old fashioned social stereotypes.
- To identify routes around barriers to entry for anyone to get into technology.
- To encourage and nurture those interested in technology.
- To work with local schools, colleges and universities to encourage more women into the technology industry.
- To support those currently in the industry and work together to figure out the issues and the solutions.
- To include men, women and children in this journey… and not exclude men from Girl Geek Dinner Events.
