30 years. ❤️

We’ve spent this month digging through old photos, sharing stories and introducing you to some of the people who have helped shape MRC along the way.

But the truth is, there’s no way we could tell the story of MRC by naming just a handful of people.

Over 30 years, so many people have walked through our doors and left their mark. Some were here for a short chapter, others have been along for a good chunk of the ride, and some are still here helping write the story today.

Every job completed, customer taken care of, phone answered, problem solved and lesson passed along has played a part in getting MRC to where it is today.

To everyone who has ever been part of the MRC team, and especially to the incredible group of people who make up MRC today... thank you. We quite literally couldn't have done it without you. ❤️

Here’s to the people behind the last 30 years, and the ones who will carry us through whatever comes next.

Happy 30th, MRC! 🎉

Throughout this month, you’ve watched MRC grow from two guys taking a chance in 1996, all the way to the acquisition of Perth Communications in 2018. And while Perth brought a lot to MRC, one of its most important additions was a familiar face... Jesse!

Jesse’s history with MRC goes back much further than 2018. Jesse started at Perth Communications out of college, becoming an integral part of the team, and through the close relationship between the two companies, an important part of MRC’s story too.

Jesse worked closely with Martin, Charlie and the MRC team for years, sharing equipment, lending manpower and helping out wherever he could. Long before his name was ever on the MRC payroll, Jesse was already very much part of the team.

So when Perth officially became part of MRC in 2018, Jesse wasn’t really a new addition at all... we just finally got to call him one of ours 😁

With Charlie stepping away, Jesse joined Steven alongside Martin, and a new generation of MRC leadership began to take shape.

We’ve spent this month looking back at the people who helped build MRC, but 30 years isn’t just about where we’ve been. It’s also about where we are and where we’re going!

“It takes a village” is what they say about those pesky children we shared on Monday... but MRC was a child in itself, and it needed a village too 💞

MRC does not exist today without Perth Communications.

Charlie spent part of his career working at Perth, where he formed a relationship with owner Bruce. When Martin & Charlie went out on their own, that relationship grew into one between the two businesses, and would prove integral to MRC’s future success.

In those early years, Perth was always there. The two businesses bought and sold equipment from each other, shared staff when an extra set of hands was needed, and helped each other however they could. They were even included in each other’s Christmas parties for many years!

So when MRC acquired Perth Communications in 2018, it felt less like bringing another company into the fold and more like making official a relationship that had already existed for decades.

And through that acquisition, we officially added someone to the MRC team who would become a pretty important part of its future... 😉

Speaking of those MRC kids... let’s fast forward a couple of decades. 😉

In September 2017, Charlie’s daughter Jenn got married. Why does that matter to the MRC story? Well...

Jenn got married in Sheri & Charlie’s backyard, and Charlie decided to “take two weeks off” to get everything ready for the wedding.

Six weeks AFTER the wedding, Charlie’s son Steven finally called him:

Steven: “Are you planning on coming back to work?”
Charlie: “...Nope!”
Steven: “Then come get your stuff out of your office because I’m moving in.” 🤣

And apparently, that’s how you retire from a family business!

As we’ve said, MRC is a true family business, and the time had come for Charlie to step away and for Steven to become Martin’s new partner in crime.

But Charlie left some big shoes to fill...

As luck would have it, MRC was on the verge of acquiring another company - and with it, someone who would become a pretty important part of MRC’s future. 😉

Remember when we mentioned Martin & Charlie were told MRC wouldn’t last a year?

At the time, cellular was the way of the future and many believed it would make two-way radio obsolete. Martin & Charlie believed there would always be a need for reliable two-way communications and, 30 years later, we’d say they were onto something!

MRC didn’t just stick around long enough to prove the haters wrong, it stuck around long enough for the next generation to grow up right alongside it! When we say MRC is a family business, we mean it!

*******

Us kids (because some of us are still here!!) developed our work ethic thanks to our parents.
We practiced our math skills counting petty cash, sometimes, I’m sure, to Sheri’s dismay.
And we solidified our alphabetical skills filing invoices... which I’m confident Shelley had to fix later. 😂

Sometimes even our friends got in on the action! If we were smarter, we would’ve taken a cut of their pay as a finder’s fee...

Turns out, growing up around MRC had a way of sticking with you. ❤️

⭐ 30 YEARS, COUNTLESS FACES ⭐

You’ve met the founders, now it’s time to meet a few members of the early MRC crew!

Bob was MRC’s very first employee AND its first retiree! Bob spent his MRC career as a technician, and retirement hasn’t kept him away! From time to time he still stops by with ice cream - which may just be the reason he’s managed to stay on the Christmas party guest list all these years! 🍦🎄

Shelley joined MRC in 1997, just one year after it all began, and has been a familiar face at the front desk ever since. Now in her 29th year with MRC, she holds the record as the company’s longest-tenured employee. That’s a whole lot of MRC history! 🧠✨

Sheri joined in 1999 after deciding the family business was successful enough to leave her job and go work for her husband... aka herself! 😂 A CPA, she served as VP of Finance until her retirement this past May.

30 years means a whole lot more faces and a whole lot more stories. Stay tuned for more! ❤️

In our previous post, I failed to mention the moustaches... ohhhh, those ’80s moustaches. 😂

Meet the dynamic duo behind MRC: Martin & Charlie!

Before MRC, Martin and Charlie spent years working together for another employer. When Charlie handed in his two weeks’ notice, Martin approached him with a business proposition - and after that, they’d only ever work for themselves!

As they set out on this new adventure, they were promptly told, “You won’t last a year.”

Well... 30 years later, I think it’s safe to say they proved the haters wrong. 😉

In 1996 MRC opened it's doors and began servicing the KW region. 30 years later (29 more than we were told we'd last 😉) we're proudly servicing customers across Southern Ontario from our offices in Kitchener, Stratford and London.

This month, we'll be sharing some memories from over the last 3 decades so be sure to stay tuned for coke bottle glasses, massive computer monitors, and questionable hair styles 😄
