Exploring Rural Connectivity

Across Canada, rural communities face uneven access to connectivity – a digital divide between urban and rural, as well as across rural. A growing number of rural communities have taken active roles in local connectivity.

Selkirk College’s BC Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development, Dr. Sarah-Patricia Breen, co-authored a new open access journal article on rural connectivity with Dr. S. Ashleigh Weeden, University of Guelph, and Dr. Wayne Kelly, Director of the Rural Development Institute at Brandon University.

This paper explores several examples and uses them to develop a set of rural community models with the aim of inviting further refinement and challenge of these models and to help communities understand the challenges and options for building local Internet access.

Portions of this research was funded by the Mitacs Accelerate program, with support from CityWest. We would like to gratefully acknowledge the support and guidance received from Dr. Robert Long at City West and the contributions of research interns McKenna Dubois and Ish*th Nigam.

KiN is aware of an issue affecting our service and we are investigating. The issue is upstream from kin. We will update this message as soon as we know more. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

1:00 update: a power outage in Balfour is affecting our upstream provider. KiN techs have routed traffic over our backup wireless link to Crawford Bay. Expect the next update by 3pm.

2:20pm, final update: Power has been restored upstream and all services should be back to normal. If you are still experiencing issues, try power cycling your equipment. Our support line is 250.353.1546 but may not be able to respond immediately due to the large volume of calls received.

When power fails, KiN doesn’t.
If you need to get online or make a phone call from the North Kootenay Lake areas affected by the most recent power outage, there is a free public phone at the Argenta Hall.

If you are able to provide generator or battery power to the KiN devices in your house, you can connect as normal. Our network, designed by locals, has power resiliency as a core feature.
