Everyone is asking the wrong question about AI.

The question I keep hearing is: how do we add AI to our business?

The question nobody is asking is: are we actually ready for it?

I sit across from organisations every week. And I keep seeing the same pattern.

A business running on spreadsheets held together by one person who has been there fifteen years. Data living in three places that never talk to each other. Processes that nobody fully understands except the person who built them.

Then someone reads an article and says, lets do AI.

And what happens? You take a broken process, automate it, and now you have a broken process running faster. The chaos does not disappear. It scales.

Here is what nobody tells you. AI does not fix broken foundations. It amplifies them.

Get the data clean. Get the processes clear. Build systems that reflect how your organisation actually works today.

Then AI becomes something genuinely powerful.

When 15 Excel Sheets Ran an Organization

A few years ago, I worked with an organization managing critical operations across 15 different Excel sheets.

Everything depended on one or two individuals who understood how those sheets worked.

If they were unavailable, things slowed down.

They had already invested in a CRM.

But it didn’t match how they actually operated.

So instead of creating clarity, it created frustration.

Eventually, they stopped trusting technology altogether.

What I learned from that experience was simple:

The problem wasn’t the software.

The problem was misalignment.

They didn’t need more tools.

They needed direction.

What actually needs to change?
What should we not build?

Only after that do we touch technology.
