As we all watch the horrors of Russian barbarism in Ukraine, I am reminded of our Ukrainian next-door neighbours and dear family friends in Edmonton, as a child. They were warm, kind, wonderful people. We were often treated to freshly made pedaheh (perogies), and other delicious Ukrainian food. They once gifted our family intricately painted Ukrainian Easter eggs. The egg inside had been carefully drained out, and once the shells dried thoroughly, they were delicately painted by repeated wax masking and dipping, resulting in beautiful, vibrant geometric patterns. Just exquisite, labourious work. They were rightly and deeply proud of their traditions and culture, and we were privileged to be exposed to it.
I am profoundly moved, on a daily basis, by the bravery and resolve of the Ukrainian people, and the inspirational grace of their leader, President Zelenskyy. Слава Україні! Slava Ukrayini! Glory to Ukraine!
