POLICE WARNING COMMUNITIES ABOUT ONGOING SOPHISTICATED BEC FRAUDS TARGETING INDIGENOUS ORGANIZATIONS

Further to a warning issued in April 2026, the Anishinabek Police Service (APS) is again warning Indigenous businesses and organizations in its communities to be aware of an active, serious, ongoing fraud threat.

This second warning is being issued after five additional reports of Business Email Compromise (BEC) were received by APS in recent weeks.

BEC is a sophisticated fraud in which criminals send an email message that appears to come from a known source making a legitimate request. The scammers, using a spoofed or compromised email account of the supplier, informed the organizations of a change in payment details. The email included new banking information with instructions to send future payments to the “new” account which is actually fraudulent. Believing the instructions to be legitimate, the organizations then made payment – in good faith – to the scammer’s account. Combined total losses in these recent cases exceeds $544,000.

Today we recognize the importance of working towards su***de prevention. When you can, encourage conversations and break the stigma surrounding mental health by showing your support. Having even a small, simple conversation with a family member or friend can be meaningful to that person. A small impact of any kind is still important and can make someone feel valued and supported. Talking about mental health is not easy for everyone, but having a community to lean on can be incredibly helpful.

DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH!

We are looking for individuals who receive inbound calls from Emergency services and will be responsible for dispatching calls out to our current direct service volunteers. This role is done completely remotely. You must have access to your own computer and cell phone. All necessary training will be provided as well as partnership with experienced dispatchers during your shifts. Must be available/willing to be on call evenings, overnights, and weekends. Must sign up for one shift block per month.

Expectations when on call include: Ability to answer phone, record all information provided and relay accurately to volunteers and provide any support/assistance needed while they are on scene. Reporting information to VSW staff.

This role does not include direct service of victims. Minimum of 1 year commitment required, and applicants must be minimum 20 years of age.
