Google is rolling out a new scam detection feature for Android that automatically verifies whether an incoming call from a known contact is genuine or spoofed. The system works by detecting whether a call is actually originating from the supposed caller's device: when a call comes in, Phone by Google sends a silent encrypted RCS verification through Google Messages. If that verification is absent — as it would be when scammers use online relays to fake a contact's number — a pop-up alerts the recipient that the person on the line may not be who they appear to be. The feature detects number spoofing, not AI voice cloning directly — though AI voice cloning is commonly used in combination with spoofed numbers to make scam calls more convincing. The feature is available on Android 12 and higher, but requires three Google apps: Phone by Google, Contacts, and Google Messages. Users on Samsung or OnePlus devices whose default apps differ can still access the feature by downloading Phone by Google from the Play Store and setting it as their default dialer. The person calling must also have the same setup for verification to work. The update comes as impersonation scams have grown significantly — the FTC tracked approximately $2.95 billion in losses from such fraud in 2024, with AI voice cloning tools making schemes increasingly difficult to detect.
