Follow me as I start my laser engraving journey and build a business. To give you a little background about me, I have been a tech nerd since I was a little kid. I started learning basic programming in 1981 at 15 years old, My first computer was a Tandy MC-10 that I acquired at 17. I got my diploma in computer programming and systems analysis in 1991. Although I already had a little experience upgrading my computers over the years, I didn’t build my first computer from parts until 1992. By 1996 I already had a few years experience doing tech work, trouble shooting, hardware upgrades, etc. In early 1996 I started my first computer sales, service and programming business. By 2003 I was part of 2 companies, one doing computer tech work, sales and custom programming, and the other doing web page design, hosting, graphics design, on-line programming, etc. In 2008 I got too ill to continue working, in 2012 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. I have recently been regaining much of my health using alternative medicine. As I am getting back into being able to really work with computers effectively I realized I no longer wanted to be a computer tech, but I have always been a good teacher, so I decided to create this page to teach others computer stuff. Since I got sick, I shifted from the PC world to the Apple Universe with no regrets. This is why my focus will be on Apple products and of course things related to social media. Update: April 7, 2021 - I have now built a custom Windows PC for myself so going forward I will also be adding Windows related content.

Making a ruler & locating jig in Lightburn

I needed to determine exactly where my material is completely addressable in the work area for my WeCreat Vision Pro laser machine using Lightburn. I show you how to create a long ruler in a couple of minutes. We use variable text to label the ruler in seconds. A jig like this on a steel honeycomb rack is a game changer. Precise placement every time.

Look what showed up early today.

The steel honeycomb grid for my WeCreat Vision Pro. Woohoo. I’ll be celebrating with a tutorial on getting the Vision Pro working and dialed in with Lightburn. Coming this weekend.

The cat pic is just because I love my cat and she loves her new laser cut food dish platform lol.

Lightburn and WeCreat Vision Pro fine tuning.

I’m absolutely loving Lightburn. It’s absolutely WAY better than the manufacturer’s software. For example, “Make It” allows X & Y offset compensation, but only a master adjustment for all speeds.

LightBurn lets me adjust offset at any speed I want to. I could never get the ultra sharp detail I thought my laser should be capable of.

Now I’ve got it perfected for 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 & 600 mms. This should get me closer to the results I want.

Each “rectangle” is done at a different speed.

So the test I did engraves multiple rectangles but with a line spacing of 0.8 mm. This gives me a series of lines. Each line is drawn in the opposite direction. You can see the ends don’t line up at the beginning.

After 5 tests and adjustments you can see I’ve got it dialled in.

Two other things I love in lightburn are how fast I can make living hinges from scratch. The other is how lightburn gives me direct control of the laser.

No more sending the job, then pressing the button on the laser. When I hit play on the print, it starts immediately and reports the progress.

The preview feature is fantastic. I’m absolutely in love with this software for my WeCreat Vision Pro. I’m definitely buying this.

WeCreat Vision Pro 45w working flawlessly on LightBurn so far.

After getting bit by a couple of nasty bugs in the laser software for my WeCreat Vision Pro 45w. I tried lightburn. It looks like the newest lightburn and WeCreat’s config file worked well together. The camera works and is calibrated.

After all the calibration steps, I was able to score a square, then move the wood, increase the square to a rectangle and align it with the previous square. Very, very close. It calibrated more accurately than the “Make It” laser software from WeCreat. So far I’m very pleased. Now to go down the rabbit hole and learn lightburn.

The tutorial on WeCreat’s website is really out of date, but got me through enough to figure the rest out.

Can anyone recommend some channels for lightburn tutorials?

Wavy Live Hinge Design in Inkscape

I cover how to design straight line and wavy line living hinges in Inkscape. We import to the laser software and cut the pattern. I introduce a few concepts in Inkscape such as clones, formulas for placement and sizing. I go through it step by step, slow and easy to follow. We discuss how line density effects flexibility.

I include my master files for download with 4 different live hinge designs. Both the Inkscape master version and the plain SVG for importing into your laser software.

We are doing this on the WeCreat Vision Pro 45 watt diode laser machine.

Laser Hold Down Clips.

After much trial and error, I think I’ve perfected a hold down clip for the WeCreat Vision Pro.

This one grips the rail instead of wedging between them. One size fits all. They should not be as fragile as the last ones.

Here’s a link to my Google Drive. You’ll find the file there along with some other useful files.

This new clip grips so well, I can lift the rack with the clip. I’m very pleased with the new design. The tabs are a good fit, but the tops should be glued to the bases.

Designed & Tested my own living hinge.

After some testing I perfected my own living hinge design. Took several samples to dial in the settings and design.
Final design: 0.125 mm thick rectangles (lines). 2mm spacing between lines, 2mm gap between line ends. Decent flexibility, with no picking slivers of wood out of the lines.
Material: 3.1 mm hard board. Plain and painted white 1 side.

WeCreat Vision Pro:
P:100%, 11 mms, 1 pass.
