Who ya got: The Kansas City Chiefs or Philadelphia Eagles?

Huge shoutout goes out to the Eskasoni Eagles that are currently first place overall in the Nova Scotia Junior B Hockey League.

The Eagles are the first ever Mi’kmaq owned Junior B hockey team in Nova Scotia which the has a mix of Mi’kmaq and non-Indigenous players. What makes it even more special is the top 4 scoring leaders in the entire division are Mi’kmaq players.

Some who have been cut from other teams in the past or spent a lot of time on the bench until Chief leroy of Eskasoni decided to make his own team to give these players a chance to play. The team is only 5 years old and have a pretty good chance at finishing 1st overall this season.

They had to fight hard just to be part of the league, they had a lot of push back and also had to deal with the occasional racism. The non-Indigenous kids that play on the team have never experienced anything like this and have a new perspective of what racism is like and have greater respect and love for the Mi’kmaq teammates and Mikmaw people.
