This story out of France caught our attention: Overnight on Sunday, hackers forced refrigerators at hundreds of French grocery stores up to 50°C. Stores threw out their fresh and frozen stock, and some reported fires. The equipment maker has since confirmed the affected systems were running outdated firmware.

The investigation is still ongoing, but the incident is a good reminder of a few basics that apply to almost any business.

🔌Know what’s connected: Fridges, heating and cooling, cameras, door access, TVs, and printers are often online today. These are known as IoT (Internet of Things) devices. You can’t protect what you don’t know is there, so a current list of everything on your network is the starting point.

☁️ Keep IoT devices on their own network: Smart equipment rarely needs to talk to the computers that hold your financial or customer data. Putting it on a separate network limits how far a problem can spread if one device is compromised.

🪣 Patch and update everything, not just computers: Firmware updates on equipment are easy to forget, especially when it seems to be working fine. As this incident shows, outdated software on a single type of device can have very real consequences.

Cybersecurity isn’t only about laptops and email anymore. It’s about everything with a connection.
