SUPPORT WORKER FOR A YOUNG MAN WITH AUTISM
Pay Rate: starting at $18 per hour
Start Date: January 2019
Hours: There are currently 2 positions available:
1. Position 1: Four weekend evenings a month (Sat/Sun) from 5pm-10pm (total of 20 hours per month);
2. Position 2: 26 hours per week. This includes days, evenings and some weekend day shifts.
Description
The Friends of Luke Society is looking for a support person to work with a young man who has autism and an intellectual disability. Luke is fun, active, and has lots of energy. We run a high-intensity program that is designed and supervised by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. This is not a “laid back” program (eg, “babysitting” or “keeping the client safe”). We require Luke’s support staff to be actively engaged with him at all times to teach him new skills, to run multiple behaviour interventions throughout the day, and to participate in his exercise activities (except speed skating).
Requirements
a positive, outgoing personality
ability to be firm when necessary
able to work evenings and/or weekends
a reliable vehicle and a class 5 driver’s licence
a criminal record check
English as a first language (Luke has severe receptive and expressive language deficits)
non-smoker
Please do not apply if you are do not have an energetic and outgoing personality, or if you are not prepared to be actively engaged with Luke throughout the day. Preference will be given to applicants who are physically fit. No experience is necessary. Training will be provided by the program coordinator and the senior therapist.
Duties:
1. Support for activities of daily living (eg. hygiene, cooking, housework),
2. Teaching new skills
3. Running multiple behaviour interventions and recording data
4. Community inclusion (eg buying groceries)
5. Support and participation in Luke’s exercise program
