The Durham Region has experienced a notable surge in property crimes and brazen smash-and-grab tactics. In residential areas, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has warned the public about a sharp uptick in daytime residential break-ins executed by organized groups often posing as tradespeople. Simultaneously, the region continues to battle high rates of vehicle theft alongside frequent vehicle entry attempts where perpetrators target personal belongings and valuables left inside cars. Most alarmingly, communities have seen an emergence of home invasions, with armed suspects forcefully entering residences in municipalities like Oshawa and Ajax, holding occupants at gunpoint to steal high-value assets.
Reviewing camera footage after an attempted vehicle entry is a reactive response. A person may test a door handle, move on if it is locked, and potentially return later when there has been no visible deterrent or intervention. If a door is unlocked or a window is broken, footage can help document the incident and support reporting - but it cannot prevent the loss.
Our proactive security approach can detect suspicious activity - such as someone checking vehicle door handles - and trigger real-time alerts and professional monitoring so action can be taken before a break-in occurs. With well designed deterrence and rapid intervention, perpetrators rarely get close enough to vehicles to attempt entry.
