The latest NASDPTS Illegal School Bus Passing Survey delivered both a warning and a reason for optimism.

According to the survey, an estimated 38.4 million illegal school bus passings occurred during the 2025-2026 school year. That's still 38.4 million too many.

But compared to the previous year's estimate of 39.3 million illegal passings, that's a 2.3% decrease.

While there is still significant work to do, progress matters.

Every reduction represents fewer dangerous encounters around stopped school buses and fewer opportunities for students to be placed in harm's way. It shows that the combined efforts of school districts, transportation professionals, law enforcement, legislators, technology providers, and safety advocates are making a difference.

At Safe Fleet, reducing illegal passings is central to our mission of helping prevent injuries and fatalities in and around school buses. While one illegal passing is one too many, we're encouraged to see movement in the right direction and remain committed to helping the industry continue that progress.

Bus entry steps and aisles are high-traffic areas where small hazards can quickly lead to injuries. We are closing out National Safety Month by focusing on targeted hazard reduction inside the vehicle.
