Most people never think about their AV rack until something goes wrong.

Maybe the gear in the closet runs hot. Maybe the fans are loud. Maybe every service visit turns into a guessing game of which cable does what. For homeowners and builders across Vancouver and West Vancouver, these issues usually come back to the same place: the rack was never designed as true infrastructure.

At Graytek, we treat the AV rack as the backbone of the smart home. Proper design manages heat and airflow, keeps noise out of living spaces, organises and labels cabling for fast service, and pairs everything with rock solid power and networking.

The result is a system that feels calm and predictable instead of fragile and frustrating.

If your rack already looks like a tangle of wires or you are planning a new build and want to avoid those headaches, this article is for you.

From landmark custom homes to a single showroom detail

Most days, our work with Teragon Developments happens on some of the biggest and most beautiful custom homes in Vancouver. Their team handles the construction and finishes while we design the lighting, networking, and motorized shading that quietly power the home behind the scenes.

Today’s story is smaller in scale but just as meaningful. Teragon came out to our Coquitlam showroom to help frame in a drop for our new shade and drapery display, part of our “something big is coming” upgrade. It is a reminder that great partnerships show up for everything, from major milestones on site to the small details that help us serve clients better. We would not be who we are without trade partners like Teragon who share the same goal of delivering the best finished product possible.

Training never stops at Graytek, because your home’s future depends on it

Our Graytek Training Academy is where the team stays sharp and future focused. This week’s in‑house session is all about fibre optic cable splicing and termination, giving technicians space to practise terminations, test gear, and build confidence before this work happens behind your walls. As bandwidth demands grow, that extra training time helps us design fibre backbones that are ready for tomorrow’s streaming, cameras, and control systems.

Whether we are working on a custom home in Vancouver or a getaway in Whistler, our continuous training culture keeps the crew current, aligned, and thinking ahead. It is how we protect your investment and keep your smart home performing for years to come.

Following our recent blog post on designing hidden technology, here is one piece of the video puzzle

In that post, we shared why planning early is the key to calm, uncluttered rooms. Crestron NVX is one of the ways we put that into practice for video. By moving your Apple TVs, cable boxes, and players into a central Graytek rack, then sending video over the network, we can hide the gear and still send any source to any integrated display in the home. Your family room, kitchen, gym, or bedroom just sees a slim TV and a simple control interface.

For clients across Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Whistler, this is one of several approaches we use to keep technology in the background. NVX lets us reuse the same sources across multiple TVs and grow over time using the existing network infrastructure. Service and upgrades happen at the rack, so your finished spaces stay looking the way your designer intended.

Clean, modern interiors rely on more than good finishes. They rely on decisions that are made at the right time. Few things expose this more than TVs and speakers that show up late in the design process.

If a TV niche is the wrong depth, if a speaker has nowhere to go in the ceiling plan, or if the AV rack is forced into a sealed cabinet, the result is the same. Compromises that chip away at the architecture.

In our latest blog, we share how to hide TVs, speakers, and equipment racks in a new build without ruining the design. You will see how early AV coordination helps you:

Keep millwork and feature walls clean
Align speaker grilles with lighting and HVAC
Choose proper rack locations with real ventilation
Place keypads where they support the interior, not fight it
If you are working on a custom home in Vancouver or West Vancouver, this is a simple way to protect your design intent and your client’s experience.

Give your home a smarter kind of “reset”

When something in a modern home glitches, the old advice is to “unplug it and plug it back in.” At Graytek, we have built that idea into the system itself using WattBox power management and OvrC remote monitoring. Each key device sits on a managed outlet, so both you and our team can safely reboot the right gear without climbing behind furniture or opening a rack.

With the OvrC Connect app, you can reboot devices like Telus boxes or Apple TVs with a single tap, using clear names that match your rooms and sources. If the issue needs more help, our dedicated service team can step in, check power logs, and sequence reboots remotely, often restoring everything before anyone misses a show.

It is all part of the Graytek service model for clients across Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Whistler: design the right infrastructure up front, give you simple tools to try first, and back it with 24/7 remote support from people who know your system inside and out.

Something big is happening at Graytek

This room in Metro Vancouver does not look like much yet. Plastic on the floor, tools everywhere, and tape lines on the walls. By Fall, it will be something completely different.

We are keeping the details under wraps for now, but watch this space over the next few weeks as we drop more hints.

Tired of fighting with your smart home? Let us bring it back into line.

Maybe the lights never behave the same way twice. Maybe the TV room is full of remotes. Or maybe you bought a beautiful home with someone else’s tech and have no idea where to start. That is where Graytek comes in.

We work with homeowners across Vancouver, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Whistler to rescue confusing, unreliable systems and turn them into calm, predictable experiences . Instead of defaulting to a full rip-out, we begin by understanding your existing wiring, racks, and control platform, then design a path to clean things up: reprogramming where possible, upgrading key pieces where it counts, and putting everything behind a single, intuitive interface .

The result feels like a fresh start without starting over. Your home looks the same, but the technology finally works quietly in the background so you can relax and enjoy it.

If you are planning a smart home as part of a new custom build or renovation in Vancouver or West Vancouver, you might be asking the same question we hear all the time:

“I am not sure what happens next, or who is responsible for what.”

Smart home technology touches many parts of the project, so unclear expectations can create real friction for homeowners, builders, and designers. That is exactly why every Graytek project follows a clear, documented lifecycle.

In our latest blog, we break that lifecycle down into four simple stages:
• Discovery to understand how you want the home to feel, and which spaces matter most
• Design to turn your priorities into a coordinated, buildable plan for all the trades
• Ex*****on to install, integrate, and commission the system with fewer surprises
• Service to support the home long term, and adapt as your needs change

You will see what decisions happen when, what we need from you, and how this structure keeps the project on track from first meeting to long after move-in.

Start here if you want a calmer, more predictable smart home project:
