thermal paste = goop they use between your heatsinks and the processor and gpu chips. It allows better heat conductivity so the fans can more easily push out the heat.
In theory good paste lasts a long time. (maybe never needing replacement) Unless your fans are failing or the computer is so plugged with dust bunnies or pet hair etc... that they can't work. The system over heats and the paste breaks down = unable to do its job.
We replaced the paste on the last laptop thru here because the system was most of the way thru a full teardown to get all the debris out. Photos - old paste... and a freshly cleaned heatsink. :)
