Thank you for 23 years!🙌🎂

Thanks to our clients, team members, partners, collaborators, and community for being a part of our journey as a company these past 23 years.

It’s a big leap to start a new business, and way back in 2003 when Melody took that leap she hadn’t imagined that over two decades later, things would still be rolling along in the land of Fresh Media... and, Rob joining the company in 2006 was another fun addition on this path.

As a small business, growing, streamlining and evolving is a journey we wouldn't trade. We’ve learned a lot, achieved great things for our clients and ourselves, received recognition and awards (that we never expected yet totally appreciate!), and are so grateful for every second of it.

Reflecting on these past years over the summer has been a fun walk down memory lane. We didn’t share ALL the good stuff, there’s plenty more we’re holding onto till our 25th birthday. 😉

Cheers to 23 years of keeping it FRESH with us!

ARE YOU A FUSSY PANTS? - CHEERS TO 23 YEARS

Sometimes a client project isn’t just fun, it can make positive change within our community.

The PEI School Milk Foundation needed to develop an in-class presentation for Grades 1-thru-6 on healthy eating based on Canada's Food Guide. Our approach was to capture the attention of the little ones and hold their attention in a fun way.

We created custom cartoon characters to be the actual storytellers for all the curriculum, all set in Planet Food, Yums (with his 'Yummy Tummy') continuously tries to teach his friend Fussy Pants how to eat healthy based on the Food Guide.

Along with bringing Yums and Fussy Pants to life, we co-wrote new Food Adventures stories for each grade, designed all of the presentation materials, any marketing communications for the schools, and assisted the PEI School Milk Coordinator with ongoing materials and support for well over a decade.

Adding play into the marketing of such an important message paid off. Not only did the kids love Yums and Fussy Pants as much as we did, but they learned about developing healthy eating habits through these fun, foodie characters.

LARGER THAN LIFE BRAND - CHEERS TO 23 YEARS

One of our biggest brand projects, both physically and in scope, was the brand identity for the new Prince Edward Island Convention Centre. A substantial development in the heart of Charlottetown offering expanded options for meetings and conventions within the province.

As the build was underway we were contracted to develop the identity for the venue that would align with the aesthetic of the environment, the essence of the Island, and a unique take on convention venue branding. Not a small task, but we were keen to contribute to this soon-to-be landmark, and with a tight deadline we were game for the challenge!

We had the opportunity to tour the construction site, get a sneak peak of the style, colour palette, textures, finishes, and vision the architects were bringing to life.

Standing on the edge of the harbour with expansive vistas of water, sky, land and the spirit of dreaming big gave us a sense of the direction we could take.

The client was more than happy with the final rendition of the brand identity and the architects took the look and feel as inspiration for additional wayfaring signage within the space. It’s always great to have the happy client, but walking through the convention centre at the grand opening and seeing the brand lit up (literally) made us pretty happy too. 😉

Attending business events, celebrations, meetings, training sessions and our own Fresh Media team days within the space is still a thrill. We’re still proud to have branded this top-notch venue that has certainly become a legacy within our Island community.

BALANCING FAMILY & BIZ - CHEERS TO 23 YEARS

Growing up in a family business, it was the norm to have home chores mixed in with business tasks in our household. Seeing my Mom on the phone booking guests for our Motel and Cottages, witnessing her at the dining table balancing the books, or Dad bringing home blueprints and making adjustments for his latest build, it was just a part of life. I saw the daily routine of my parents as small business owners up close and personal. Actually, when I was little, I thought everyone’s parents had a business!

That’s come full circle with our kid and Fresh Media, at just a few days old, to now a growing teen sharing his own ideas about business, he’s been in the mix.

The day we were released from the QEH, Rob, William and I headed to the office to meet the crew and show our little bundle around the place. Fond memories of him on my lap as a toddler watching as I designed, sent emails and planned next steps fr the business. PD days with him hanging out near my desk drawing his own ads for Burger Love and giving me feedback on our client work… an Art Director from day-one. 🙂 Doing homework in our meeting room after school when we have a deadline pending, or some March Break time playing video games with our programmers kiddo in the room next door.

He’s grown up alongside of Fresh Media over the last 16 years, and although he has my DNA, he’ll pursue his own path in the future, but if he ventures into business, Rob and I will be cheering him on and there to listen, support, and celebrate.

Fun fact, my Mom & Dad continuously volunteered to help at our business over the years. 😊 I’d tell them they earned their retirement years even when they’d just show up to help in some way.

Did I ever find that magical work/life balance formula? Not really.

However, over the lifespan of Fresh Media, I’ve learned that business and life are indeed intertwined, family business means both will overlap, and even though I found difficult at times in William’s earlier years. In the end, I wouldn’t change a thing.

BEST & SCARIEST 5TH BDAY ADVICE- CHEERS TO 23 YEARS

Starting a business is no small thing. Reaching the milestone of 5 years felt pretty amazing, but a reality check stopped me in my tracks.

Coming up on Fresh Media's 5th birthday, we were so excited to share the celebration with all of our clients, contacts and friends. As we planned and prepped, and sent out invites for our big party, we eagerly awaited the RSVPs. As the date drew closer and the responses rolled in there was one that stood out.

Among the ‘Congratulations’, ‘Looking forward to the party’, and ‘Wow. Happy 5th Birthday’, there was an RSVP that was like a cold glass of water dumped on my head.

The first person I ever spoke with about starting a business, and someone I’ve always admired replied with the most honest sentiment possible. Dear sweet Rupert replied with a yes to the RSVP and included this sobering message…

“Congratulations on reaching 5 years. Most businesses fail between year 5 and 7.”

After the initial shock, then a chuckle, I was incredibly grateful for his matter-of-fact somewhat scary message. I replied ‘Thanks Rupert. You have a way of keeping things real.”

Since that day, that 5th birthday party, and the years that have followed, I’ve always had that message in the back of my mind. I’m well aware anything could change at any time, so I’ve savoured making it to year 5, then year 7, and straight through to 23 years in business.

Over the years I've learned it’s great to have folks celebrate the wins with you, but it’s just as important to have people around you that help keep your feet on the ground.

MORE THAN JUST A NAME - CHEERS TO 23 YEARS

We've worked with countless brand launches, refreshes and complete re-branding, but there are some that are so pivotal that it's more than just the visual it is the impact the brand itself represents.

Working with the incredible folks at AIDS PEI on the development of a new name and brand to shift from AIDS PEI Community Support Group Inc. and now known as PEERS Alliance was an amazing journey. Developing a new name that would allow for such an essential organization to continue to evolve and develop in the years to come was an honour. Through in-depth research, and most importantly getting to know the people and stories behind the organization, PEERS Alliance remains one of the brand projects we are most proud of to this day.

Seeing the great work they do for our Island community since the PEERS brand launched is a reminder of the importance of naming, positioning and brand recognition in connecting with your audience. In some cases it can be life-changing.

BHS TRUTH OF WINNING AN AWARD - CHEERS TO 23 YEARS

Back in 2012, we were honoured to have been awarded with the title of Best Social Media Campaign in Atlantic Canada at the Atlantic Internet Marketing (AIM) Conference. What people don’t know is what was happening behind the scenes.

Fresh Media's creative work for the 2012 PEI Burger Love campaign was selected as the best Atlantic Canada social media campaign from a record number of submissions.

The Best Social Media campaign category was judged by Collin Douma, VP Global Digital Planning Leader at BBDO New York. At that point Collin was a leader of digital experience ranging from strategic consulting for social media to social strategy and digital planning on international brands. When announcing our win, he stated that we were hands down the best entry. He said that we kept the product in the centre, drove participation from consumers, promoted the many layers of PEI charm, and even taught him that there's great beef on PEI!

Pretty cool, right?

In real life things can creep in at the worst time, and this award weekend was indeed poor timing. The day we left for Halifax, our wee two year old wasn’t feeling the best, we passed it off as just being overtired and shuttled him off to grandma’s house. Not realizing the little sweetheart gifted us a surprise.

Within hours of arriving Rob and I were both violently ill and could barely move. The best we could do was hunker down in the hotel with loads of liquids and rest hoping it would pass quickly. The sickness was entrenched and we were sure we’d miss the awards, not even knowing if we’d be going home with a trophy against some pretty amazing other finalists.

The next day, Rob mustered up the energy to get to the awards to represent Fresh Media, and luckily we were dubbed the champ. Not surprisingly, he scooted out of sight soon after and back to bed.

In marriage we commit to “In sickness and health.” and I guess that goes for business too when there's a pretty cool award on the line. :)

CHEERS TO 23 YEARS - INSPIRATION IS CONTAGIOUS

We always are mindful of sharing the latest creative inspiration with clients. One of the most fun Fresh Media sharing events was presenting an exclusive screening of the film 'Art & Copy' at Charlottetown's own City Cinema.

This wasn’t only a great excuse to eat popcorn and candy, it was a unique opportunity to shed some light on the creative side of advertising for our friends and clients that were invited to this private screening. Art & Copy may seem from a bygone era, but it’s still a powerful film about advertising and inspiration, that reveals the wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives.

We not only hosted, we covered the tab for popcorn and treats for a full house, as well as giveaways of custom Fresh Media Tees and a fun door prize draw at the end of the screening. It was a great afternoon of networking, learning, and inspiration for all of us.

Anything you host can go from basic to a branded memorable experience with a strategic eye and committed ex*****on. ☺️

CHEERS TO 23 YEARS - REPPING PEI!

Being seen is one thing, being recognized on a national level is an extra cool spotlight to be in. 😉

Fresh Media was a finalist in the Design Edge Regional Awards for Atlantic Canada's Best Campaign for our PEI Burger Love campaign. As just one of two firms selected as finalists for this category, with the other finalist having offices in both Halifax and Toronto, it was an honour to be in such a talented circle.

Attending the event and rubbing shoulders within an industry of incredibly creative people we admired so much was a thrill.

The Annual Regional Design Awards were produced by Design Edge Canada, one of the past leading Canadian media brands for the graphic design industry, with a full suite of award-winning print, web, e-mail, social media and event properties engaging designers across the country. Sadly they’re no longer in circulation, but we were so proud to represent PEI on this regional and national level.

We didn’t walk away with the prize, but if anything, these kinds of awards and recognition reminds people of the amazing creative folks we have on PEI!
