With the door firmly shut on 2021, it’s important we look ahead and make Cyber Security goals that will increase our cyber resilience, reduce risk and protect us from the type of threats that have dominated these past few years.

Cybercrime has flourished during the pandemic as opportunistic cybercriminals took advantage of remote workforces — launching mass phishing campaigns, testing new ransomware variants and exploiting weaknesses in critical supply chains.

Organisations had to quickly adapt to this evolving situation and implement new systems and procedures to protect their staff from the onslaught of attacks.

Even so, employees remain vulnerable to attack and must look at ways of improving their behaviours to help prevent the types of cyber attacks that have made headlines this past year.

By implementing the small changes listed below to their day to day behaviours, employees can make a huge difference to the overall security strength of their organization.

1. Remain Vigilant Against Phishing Attacks
- Google registered over 3 million phishing websites in 2021. Up roughly 1 million from the year before.

2. Create Strong Passwords
- 59% of people use the same username and password for all their accounts so if hackers can gain access to one account, they can potentially access them all.

3. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication
- MFA requires two or more forms of authenticating data to confirm your identity. This could be a pin, code, token, or even biometric data such as a fingerprint. It’s one of the simplest ways to keep sensitive company information secure.

4. Avoid Oversharing on Social Media
- More than a third of social media users have experienced fraudulent activity due to oversharing on social media platforms. To stay safe on social media, be selective about what you share online and with who

5. Regularly Update Security Software
- Updating is estimated to prevent up to 85% of all cyber attacks, making regular updates vital to ensure the most up to date versions released by the manufacturer are running.
