Topic:
Research has shown that the transportation of products and people are the main source of pollution. Some people believe the government should be in charge of this, while others believe it is the fault of individuals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Essay (Band 8):
It is often argued that transportation is the leading cause of environmental pollution. While some people claim that the government should take full responsibility for reducing emissions from transportation, others contend that individuals must change their travel and consumption habits. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view.
Those who believe the government should be responsible argue that large-scale solutions can only be achieved through national policies. Governments have the authority to regulate industries, impose emission standards, and promote the use of public transport. For instance, by introducing stricter fuel efficiency laws or investing in electric bus systems, authorities can significantly lower the overall carbon footprint. Moreover, the government can encourage businesses to use eco-friendly logistics by offering tax incentives or subsidies for green technologies.
On the other hand, individuals also play a crucial role in tackling this issue. Personal choices, such as driving private cars instead of using public transport, or frequently ordering imported goods, directly contribute to pollution. If individuals adopted more sustainable lifestyles—such as carpooling, cycling, or buying locally produced products—the cumulative effect could be substantial. Therefore, raising environmental awareness and promoting personal responsibility are equally essential.
In my opinion, both the government and individuals share responsibility. The government must lead by implementing effective policies, but without citizens’ cooperation, such measures would fail to achieve lasting results. Only through combined efforts can society make meaningful progress in reducing transportation-related pollution.
