When Albertans compare electricity or natural-gas plans, it’s easy to focus on the headline ¢/kWh or $/GJ. But the Utilities Consumer Advocate recommends looking at the bigger picture: administration fees, contract terms and other retailer charges all matter. Transmission and distribution charges are set by your local distributor and generally don’t change just because you choose a different retailer.

Alberta consumers may also have choices between fixed and variable competitive rates. A fixed rate provides a set energy price for the contract period, while a variable rate moves with market conditions. Alberta energy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your energy plan shouldn’t be either.

One household may value predictable monthly pricing. Another may prefer following the market. A farm or business may have completely different priorities.

That’s why Ridge Utilities offers choice.

As of August 31, Ridge’s residential variable electricity rate had a 30-day moving average of 6.81¢/kWh, including its transaction fee. For customers who prefer predictability, a one-year guaranteed residential rate is currently available from 6.93¢/kWh, subject to availability.

For context, Alberta’s default Rate of Last Resort is currently about 12¢/kWh, depending on service area, and remains in place through December 31, 2026. Rates quoted here are energy charges; delivery, administration and other applicable charges are separate.
