📍Rue Saint-Jacques, Montreal
Quebec, Canada
c. 1890

Although the majority of these buildings are no longer standing, this view is still recognizable today thanks to the imposing Roman columns of the Bank of Montreal building 🏛️

Other buildings around have been torn down and replaced with more modern ones since this photo was taken.

The bank building still operates as BMO's head office and is now also home to a museum of the company.

With a population of under 200 peopled the unincorporated community of Field was and still is most popular with tourists of Yoho National Park and wider British Columbia.

📍Dominion Square, Montreal
Quebec, Canada
1901

Plans for Dominion Square began when land was bought in 1872, but construction was only completed in 1892 🧱 But the area had long been a popular meeting space.

Part of the space was used by the Sainte-Antoine Cemetery as a temporary burial spot for victims of the 1851 Cholera Epidemic. 🪦 The bodies were exhumed and moved to Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery in 1854 - but small crosses are embedded in the square’s walkways to acknowledge its previous use.

📍Pier at Murray Bay
Saint-Étienne-de-la-Malbaie, Quebec
c. 1890

When Samuel de Champlain arrived at this bay in 1605, he named the area Malle Baye, old French for “bad bay” - it was later adapted to the modern French, La Malbaie.

In 1763, the area was renamed Murray Bay after British General James Murray, but the French name continued to be used by locals until the community was officially returned to its French name in 1957.

📍Barkerville, BC
1867

Barkerville was a typical gold rush town - thrown together for the many prospectors who came through British Columbia during the Cariboo rush of the 1860s 🦌

Shown in this photo, the Main Street had raised boardwalks so people could avoid the mud.

🔥 In 1868, the entire community was destroyed by fire - however, it was later rebuilt.

Today, you can visit the Barkerville Historic Park to walk along the same streets hopeful gold miners once frequented 💭💰
