Behind the scenes at SGT…

Not every workday goes according to plan.

One member of the SGT team stepped outside this morning, ready to start their day, and had a rather unexpected encounter.

They got sprayed by a skunk.

Not near a skunk. Not smelled a skunk. Sprayed. By. A. Skunk.

Their morning was promptly replaced by hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, dish soap, and the unfortunate discovery that everything you touch afterward becomes part of the problem.

Thankfully, they work from home, something the rest of the SGT team is particularly grateful for today. 😂

The latest update is that it's slowly getting better… although we're still debating whether it actually smells better or they're just getting used to it.

Usually when we talk about disaster recovery, this isn't quite what we mean. 🦨💻

Windows Update: “Your computer needs to restart.”

Me: Remind me later.

Windows: “How about now?”

Me: Later.

Windows: “Now?”

Me: LATER.

Windows: “👀 ...now?”

We get it. 😅

As tempting as it is to keep clicking “Remind me later” forever, those updates aren't just there to annoy you. They often include important security patches, bug fixes, and other improvements that help keep your computer protected and running properly.

“But it still works…”

We hear you, and in many cases, it does!

When software or an operating system reaches End of Support, it doesn’t suddenly stop working. Your computer won’t explode, your programs won’t disappear, and everything may look completely normal.

- The problem is what happens after support ends.
- Security updates may stop
- Bugs and vulnerabilities may no longer be fixed
- New software and hardware may become incompatible
- Vendor support may no longer be available

That means the longer an unsupported system stays in use, the greater the potential security and compatibility risk, especially for a business.

It’s why we recommend keeping operating systems, software, and other business technology on currently supported versions. An upgrade isn’t always about getting shiny new features. Sometimes it’s simply about keeping the technology you already rely on secure, supported, and working properly.

I'm the person who creates the social media posts here at SGT, and today I'm going rogue.

Does anyone else want to talk about that blasted Yeti in SkiFree?

If you used a Windows computer in the early '90s, you probably remember SkiFree.

You'd be happily skiing down the mountain, dodging trees and feeling pretty good about yourself...

And then HE appeared.

The Abominable Snow Monster.

I tried to escape him. I TRIED.

It wasn't until years later that I learned something that would have been extremely useful to my childhood self:

YOU COULD ACTUALLY ESCAPE THE YETI.

Apparently, pressing F made your skier go faster.

Where was this information in 1993?!

So today's highly important SGT technology discussion is this:

Did you know you could escape the SkiFree Yeti, or did you also spend your childhood accepting your inevitable Yeti-related death?

Why Is My Wi-Fi Great Here… and Terrible Over There?

Ever notice your Wi-Fi works perfectly in one room, but a few steps away you're suddenly down to one bar?

It's a common problem, and it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with your internet connection.

Wi-Fi signals can be affected by:

Distance — The farther you are from your router or access point, the weaker the signal can become.

Walls and floors — Concrete, brick, metal, and other dense materials can make it harder for Wi-Fi signals to travel through a building.

Interference — Nearby wireless networks and other electronics can compete for the same airspace.

Router or access point placement — Where your equipment is located can make a surprisingly big difference in your coverage.

So, do you just need a Wi-Fi booster?

Maybe, but not always.

Depending on the space, the better solution could be repositioning equipment, adding or relocating a wireless access point, adjusting the network configuration, or improving the overall Wi-Fi coverage.

Because sometimes the problem isn't your internet, it's getting the Wi-Fi where you need it.

Do You Actually Need to Eject a USB Drive?

We've all done it.

You're finished with a USB drive, so you reach over and pull it out, only to wonder:

"Was I supposed to eject that first?"

The good news is that modern computers are generally much better at handling removable storage than they used to be.

But that doesn't mean the Eject button is completely obsolete.

If your computer is still writing, copying, or saving data to the drive when you remove it, you could end up with corrupted or incomplete files.

The safest habit?

Make sure any files you're working with are saved and closed.

Wait for any transfers to finish.

Use Eject/Safely Remove before unplugging the drive when possible.

It only takes a few seconds, and it's a lot less frustrating than discovering the file you needed didn't save properly.

Sometimes the old advice is still good advice.
