MFA "enabled" and MFA "enforced" are not the same thing.

Enabled means the feature exists, and some users have set it up. Enforced means every user, every sign-in, no exceptions.

The gap usually hides in three places: users who never registered, accounts exempted "just for now," and older login methods that skip MFA altogether.

Here's the difference in under a minute.

5 Microsoft 365 settings almost nobody checks after setup:

Are ex-employee accounts blocked from signing in, with licences removed?

Do shared mailboxes still allow direct sign-in?
Who can approve access for third-party apps?
Which accounts are exempt from MFA "temporarily"?
Does anyone actually look at sign-in alerts?

Five minutes in the admin center will answer most of these.

The email rule nobody remembers creating.

Auto-forwarding rules are easy to set up and easy to forget. A rule that sends a copy of every email to an outside address can come from a former employee, a rushed setup, or someone who got into an account and wanted quiet access to it.

The mailbox works normally. Nobody notices. That's the problem.

Worth checking: review forwarding rules across your Microsoft 365 mailboxes and see how many point outside your company.

Where do you start with cybersecurity when you're a small business with no dedicated IT team?

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security publishes baseline controls written for small and medium organizations: the fundamentals to have in place before anything advanced.

Think patching, strong sign-in protection, tested backups, limited admin access, and staff who can spot a suspicious email.

None of it is exotic. The value is in having it checked and written down, not assumed.

If you've never compared your setup against a baseline, that's a sensible first step.

What we actually look for in a tenant audit (60 seconds, no fluff).

Tenant Teardown: the guest accounts nobody remembers inviting.

Every Microsoft 365 tenant we look at has them: guest accounts from a project that wrapped up a year ago, a vendor relationship that ended, a contractor who finished the job in 2023. Nobody removed the access when the reason for it disappeared.

Each one is a login that still works. Most companies couldn't tell you how many exist in their own tenant right now.

It's not a dramatic finding. It's just the kind of thing that sits quietly until a security questionnaire or an insurance renewal asks the question directly: who has access to your systems, and why?

Worth a five-minute check: open your admin center, pull the guest user list, and see how many names you don't recognize.

Reactive IT is the fire extinguisher. It doesn't ask why the fire started.

Break/fix support shows up after something's already down: a locked account, a ransomware alert, a failed login you can't explain. By then the damage is scored, not prevented.

The real risk isn't the outage. It's what caused it: MFA that's enabled but not enforced, admin access nobody remembers granting, backups that have never been restore-tested. That kind of exposure sits quietly for months before it's found. And when it is found the hard way, the average Canadian data breach now costs CA$6.98 million, up 10.4% year over year (IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report 2025).

Fixing what's broken and closing what's exposed are two different jobs.

Delvetek Consulting's Insurability & Contract-Readiness Assessment finds the exposure before it becomes an incident, mapped to CCCS, CIS and NIST plus current insurer requirements.

Your IT provider closes tickets. Who checks your settings?

Most outsourced IT gets judged on how fast someone picks up the phone. Insurers and clients judge something else: is MFA enforced, how many Global Admins sit in your Microsoft 365 tenant, and has anyone ever restored a backup?

We routinely find tenants with 15 to 30 Global Admins. Nobody remembers who has them or why. We call it Invisible Configuration Debt, and it stays hidden until a client security questionnaire or an insurance renewal exposes it.

Before you outsource your IT to anyone, ask for proof in writing that these settings are enforced.

Delvetek Consulting (Mississauga) delivers that proof through the Insurability & Contract-Readiness Assessment: a plain-English report mapped to CCCS, CIS, NIST and insurer requirements.
