Railroads creating new services to win back market share from trucking

North American Class I railroads and their partners are showing a flash of creativity not seen in years in launching new domestic, international and cross-border services in recent months.

While the moves are more of a rail rejuvenation than a renaissance — railroads to some degree are still aligned with precision railroading principles — they are doing a more effective job juggling the interest of investors while providing new products to serve shippers.

Falling backhaul Europe-Asia rates ‘subsidizing’ eastbound freight moves

Plunging rate levels on the backhaul trade from Europe to Asia have left carriers effectively subsidizing eastbound cargo, according to Xeneta’s Peter Sand.

Sand, the rate benchmarking platform’s chief analyst, told the Journal of Commerce Friday that “carriers really don’t care about the dry backhaul” and instead used the corridor to mitigate vessel costs and reposition equipment.

“Currently, carriers are ‘subsidizing’ shippers on this trade with base rates being offered at minus $400 plus bunkers two weeks ago,” he said. “It’s about recovering as much as possible of the costs related to bring ship and equipment back to the Far East.

Rising green fuel costs offer looming challenge for carriers, BCOs

The alternative fuels being developed by the container shipping industry could be up to five times more expensive than current fossil fuels, costs that will need to be recovered from cargo owners, attendees at the CrossStaff BCO conference in Antwerp were told this week.

Carriers are already outlining “green surcharges” to be levied on cargo owners as early as the first quarter of next year to recover costs of complying with Europe’s emissions trading system (ETS), a small taste of what is to come as shipping transitions to new fuels that will be significantly more expensive than traditional bunker fuel.

Falling air cargo rates remain elevated despite supply-demand imbalance

Global air cargo rates in the second quarter remained well above 2019 levels despite capacity steadily increasing to pre-pandemic levels and a sharp drop in demand across most major trade lanes.

The supply-demand imbalance saw second-quarter pricing drop 40% year over year, but average air cargo rates in the period were still 34% above those recorded in 2019, according to air freight analyst WorldACD.

“Average yields on all of the world’s top 10 international air cargo markets were significantly higher in Q2 this year than their 2019 pre-COVID levels, although they were down vs. last year’s levels,” the Netherlands-based WorldACD said.

Post-strike recovery for western Canadian ports measured in weeks, not days: sources

It could take into September before the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert fully recover from the 13-day dockworker strike that idled both western Canadian ports and disrupted trans-Pacific sailing schedules, industry observers told the Journal of Commerce Friday.

The strike ended Thursday when the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (Canada) and the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association agreed on terms for a tentative four-year contract.

Western Canada port strike ends after deal reached on tentative four-year contract

The 13-day longshore strike that hit the Western Canadian ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert ended Thursday after the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada and waterfront employers reached a deal on a tentative four-year contract.

The end of the strike came less than two days after Canada’s Minister of Labour ordered the federal mediator overseeing negotiations between the union and the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association to provide recommendations for a settlement. Those recommendations were presented to both sides on Wednesday, and they had 24 hours, or late morning Pacific time Thursday, to accept or reject the proposed terms.

Western Canada dockworker strike disrupting billions in trade: employers

An estimated C$800 million of cargo is being disrupted daily by the longshore strike hitting the Western Canadian ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, representing 25% of the country’s total traded goods each day, according to the waterfront employers’ group.

And with the strike by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada now in its 11th day, some C$7.5 billion in Canadian imports and exports has been compromised thus far, the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) said in a statement Tuesday.

Net-zero shipping in IMO crosshairs as key London meetings begin

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) working group tasked with revising IMO’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategy and agreeing on acceptable measures to incentivize shipping’s move away from fossil fuel began its five-day meeting in London Monday.

The Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships gathered at IMO headquarters in a bid to iron out long-standing differences between member states and reach agreement on the path to net-zero emissions. Its findings will be passed on to the Maritime and Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) that will convene from July 3-7.
