Biophilia + Pets

There is something unique about our relationship with animals that adds to our lives, and it’s not quite the same as the relationship we have with people.

Our positive relationship to pets can, in part, be explained by the biophilia - the belief that we are genetically predisposed to be attracted to nature.

Studies show animal companionship can suppress our stress response by stimulating the secretion of the bonding hormone oxytocin and reducing the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol.

Animals don’t live in the same busy world as we do so take from their cues, slow down and connect with them for more happiness and less stress.

1 VISUAL CONNECTION WITH NATURE IN INTERIOR SPACE

Spaces that have a visual connection to nature feel whole. A view of nature can be stimulating or calming, revealing weather, seasons, patterns of light; they allow us to feel oriented in space and sync with our circadian rhythms to feel the passing of time.

is Located on a subdivided lot, surrounded by 7 homes. As the site grade slopes, the interior steps down with it to a sunken living room. Windows throughout are intentionally located to frame views of nature. The long window is lowered to frame a view of the back yard garden while seated on the sofa. Sight lines crop the top of the neighbours fence to create the feeling of privacy and solitude. Interior walls are left neutral, free from clutter, to allow the window to be the frame, and the ever- changing backdrop of nature to be the focus.

1 VISUAL CONNECTION WITH NATURE

Visual Connection with Nature refers to a view of natural elements, living systems and natural processes from within.

Our preference for views of nature is rooted in the environmental preferences that aided our survival as a species. The ability to register the passing of time, weather, and living systems that impacted our daily survival, still influences our sense of wellbeing today.

research responses to this natural stimulation prove reduced stress, more positive emotional functioning, and improved concentration and recovery rates.

Outside In, a Telus Original Documentary, examines the hard science behind a movement of healthy home design called biophilia, which suggests that building healthier homes can affect positive changes in our blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. The film features interviews with renowned architects about the future of biophilic design, introduces viewers to homeowners experimenting with biophilic principles, and showcases Jennell Stanley, interior designer and mother, and her process in building a biophilic home from the ground up, focusing on the health of her young family.

3 Nature of the Space

Refers to the physiological way in which space planning and architectural design affect our human responses and feelings.

As a species we have evolved over millennia and our success is partially due to our ability to connect with nature.

We are intuitively drawn to environments that will serve us and allow us to thrive or, entice us to explore.

Nature in the Space encompasses four biophilic design patterns:

11 Prospect

12 Refuge

13 Mystery

14 Risk / Peril

2 Natural Analogues

Refers to man-made elements that mimic nature. Objects, materials, colours, shapes and patterns that are found in nature can cue the brain and spark the same sense of well-being as the natural world.

Using the gentle, ordered or complex art of nature in design elements such as textile patterns, artwork, furniture and surfaces, can trigger our biophilic human link to nature and inspire a subconscious sense of well-being.

Nature in the Space encompasses three biophilic design patterns:

8 Biomorphic Forms and Patterns

9 Material Connection to Nature

1 Nature in the Space

Refers to a direct physical presence of nature in the built environment. Plant life, animals, water, sound, scent, a light breeze etc are a few examples.

A experiential space, with meaningful connections to nature, impacts our senses directly and has the strongest impact on us as humans.

Nature in the Space encompasses seven biophilic design patterns:

1 Visual Connection with Nature

2 Non-Visual Connection w/ Nature

3 Non-Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli

4 Thermal & Airflow Variability

5 Presence of Water

6 Dynamic & Diffuse Light

7 Connection with Natural Systems

Biophilia in Design

Research has shown that Biophilia as an applied science in design, reduces stress, expedites healing, and improves cognitive function, creativity, and wellbeing.

So, how do we apply it to design of the built environment?

Terrapin Bright Green used science and psychology to define those elements into 14 Patterns within three categories:

1 Nature in the Space - a direct presence of nature in the space
2 Nature of the Space - spatial configurations found in nature
3 Natural Analogues - man-made elements that mimic nature.
