-31.1°C outside and 3.8°C inside the greenhouse overnight.

Sometimes the numbers tell the story better than we can.
During the January 2024 cold snap, we tracked temperatures inside our 104’ working greenhouse in Armstrong, BC to see exactly how it performed through several days of extreme cold.

Over six days, outside temperatures dropped as low as -31.1°C.

Inside the greenhouse, our lowest recorded overnight temperature was 3.5°C, while daytime temperatures climbed as high as 23.7°C.

We did use supplementary heat on January 12 and 13, when outside temperatures reached -30.8°C and -31.1°C which is important to share. Every property, climate and weather event is different, and extreme conditions can require an additional heat source.

This is exactly why we believe so strongly in the Greenhouse in the Snow design- passive solar heat, geothermal heat transfer, insulation and below-grade construction all working together to create a growing environment that looks very different from the temperature outside.

Take a look at the chart and tell us: Which number surprised you most?

A piece of land can be so much more than a piece of land.

Maybe you see a place to grow enough fresh food to feed your family through all four seasons.

Maybe you see rows of produce and flowers that could become a market garden and a source of income.

Maybe you see a gathering place where your community can grow, learn, share food and become a little more connected.

A Greenhouse in the Snow four-season greenhouse kit can become part of the infrastructure that helps you put that land to work, extending what’s possible beyond the traditional Canadian growing season.

We’ve seen these greenhouses used for family food production, homesteading, market growing, community projects and larger commercial operations.

So when you look at your property, don’t only think about what it is today. We want you to think of what could it become!

Tell us what YOU would grow, build, or create if your growing season didn’t have to end when winter arrived. 🌱

If there’s one thing Canadians can agree on, it’s that nobody understands “our” winter. 🇨🇦

“It gets down to -40 here.”
“We barely see the sun in January.”
“Our frost line is DEEP.”
“You haven’t experienced wind until you’ve experienced a winter here.”

We hear you, and as the owners of Greenhouse in the Snow Canada, these are exactly the conversations we want to have.

Climate DOES matter when planning a greenhouse including your temperatures, winter sunlight, frost line, property and growing goals all need to be considered.

However, a cold winter doesn’t automatically rule out year-round growing. Trust us! That’s why we are so passionate about our greenhouses!

These greenhouses were designed specifically around cold-climate challenges, using passive solar heat, insulation, geothermal heat transfer and below-grade construction to create a growing environment very different than a conventional greenhouse.

We grow 365 days a year in our own greenhouse in Armstrong, BC. We know what cold, grey, foggy winter days look like, and we know the questions that come with considering a greenhouse for your own property.

So let’s make this one about YOU:
Where in Canada are you growing, and what’s the biggest winter challenge where you live?
Drop your province, territory or region in the comments. We’d love to talk about your growing options! 🇨🇦

Why do you step DOWN into our greenhouse? There’s a very good reason.👇

Our main grow area sits below grade, helping us take advantage of the earth’s naturally stable temperature to maintain a more consistent growing environment through the winter.

We’ve also insulated the north side of the greenhouse and designed it to reflect light back toward the growing area, maximizing passive solar gain when we need it most.

It’s a few simple, intentional design choices working together to help us grow 365 days a year, even through a Canadian winter.

There’s always a little sadness when the summer produce starts winding down... but one of our favourite things about growing in a four-season greenhouse is knowing the harvest isn’t over. It’s simply changing.

As the days get shorter and temperatures start dropping here in BC, we shift toward the crops that actually prefer the cooler months.

Things like kale, spinach, arugula, lettuce and Swiss chard. Carrots, radishes, beets, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Plus herbs like parsley, chives and cilantro.

It might look different from the overflowing summer greenhouse, but there is something pretty incredible about walking outside in the middle of the colder months and still bringing fresh food back into the house.

That’s the beauty of year-round growing. Every season has something to offer, and with a little planning, the end of the outdoor garden doesn’t have to mean the end of your harvest.

If you could walk out to your greenhouse this winter and pick ONE thing fresh for dinner, what would you grow? Let us know in the comments below 👇
