Consumer Alert: Be Wary of Thieves in Technician Clothing
Here's the scenario: a television in your home stopped working, and you called in a local electronics repair company after a quick Internet search. A technician shows up, opens the set and removes a circuit board, which he claims needs to be repaired back at the shop. He leaves with the board, and you never hear from him again.

According to a member of the National Service Dealers Association (NSDA) -- a
leading trade group for product repair businesses -- this actually happened. Consumers should know that circuit boards are valuable TV parts. In fact, Encompass adds a deposit charge on new boards we sell just to get the old ones back so they can be repaired and used again.

While you can never be 100% sure that anyone doing work at your home is not going to steal from you, you can take some extra steps to protect yourself:
Research -- It may be the NBA finals or the season finale of The Bachelor, but take some time to check out a prospective repair company. Look them up on the Better Business Bureau and read online reviews. If you find little to no feedback online, you may want to reconsider.
Referral -- Ask around to get names of proven companies. Be wary of hiring people off home improvement apps or other online services. It may be cheap, but you could lose out in the long run.
NSDA -- The association provides a search tool on its website to help you find member companies in your service area.
Most of all, just stay aware and ask your servicer for credentials and even a business license. 99% of techs out there just want to help you and provide quality service, but unfortunately there are going to be thieves among the good.
