Hey Airdrie 👋

I’m really excited to be hosting another class at the Airdrie Public Library this Friday at 6pm:

CTRL + ALT + DEFEND: Cybersecurity for Everyone

This is a practical, no-jargon session built around the real things I see every day working in IT. We’re going to break down how scams actually work, how people get tricked (it’s not what you think), and what you can do to protect yourself without going down a rabbit hole of complicated tools.

We’ll cover things like:
• How scams are designed to trigger emotion and get you to act
• The difference between legitimate emails and scam attempts
• Common Facebook and online scams happening right now
• What actually protects you (and what’s just marketing)
• Simple ways to lock down your accounts properly

The goal isn’t to overwhelm you. It’s to make you confident and give you tools you’ll actually use.

There’ll also be time for questions, so feel free to bring anything you’re unsure about.

👉 Grab your spot here:

https://bookings.yourapl.ca/event/4009849

Spots are limited, so if this sounds helpful, or you have a friend or family member you think would benefit please sign up or share. I’d recommend booking sooner rather than later as spots fill up quickly.

Hope to see you there 🙂

Today on the bench a Sony Air 7 radio that came in with no power and no response from the volume or squelch controls. Once opened up, there was clear evidence of past battery leakage in the compartment. The corrosion was neutralized using white vinegar, then the affected areas were cleaned thoroughly to prevent any further damage.

The battery corrosion had impacted part of the power circuit, so those connections were carefully cleaned and reflowed to restore proper continuity. The volume and squelch issue turned out to be unrelated to the corrosion. Both potentiometers had simply worn internally over time, similar to how analog sticks develop drift in game controllers as the internal resistive tracks wear down. Replacing the potentiometers brought back smooth, precise control across the full range.

Older electronics often show up with more than one fault at the same time. Taking the time to diagnose each issue individually ensures everything works properly when it leaves the bench.

Today on the bench a Bose Wave Music System III that would not eject discs and struggled to play CDs at full volume. This one needed more than a quick cleaning.

After pulling the unit apart, I replaced every electrolytic capacitor on both the optical drive board and the main board. Several were well out of spec, and the clock capacitor had completely failed and started to corrode the surrounding area. That was carefully neutralized and cleaned before new components went in to prevent further board damage.

To address the low volume issue, the optical drive lens assembly was also replaced. With fresh caps stabilizing the power rails and a new laser assembly installed, the system is now ejecting properly and playing clean, full-volume audio again.

These compact systems pack a surprising amount of engineering inside. Taking the time to rebuild them properly makes all the difference in long-term reliability.

Today on the bench a Nintendo DS Lite that came in with a heavily scratched lower screen and a cracked, worn-out housing. The touch response was inconsistent from the damaged digitizer, and the shell had taken enough impact over the years that it was flexing at the hinges.

This one received a brand new digitizer along with a full shell replacement. After carefully separating the display assembly and transferring over the LCD, WiFi antenna, speakers, buttons, and tiny ribbon cables, everything was reassembled with fresh plastics. The digitizer was aligned and tested for accurate touch calibration across the entire screen before final closure.

Handhelds like these take patience. There are a lot of small moving parts packed into a compact space, and getting everything seated just right makes all the difference. It is always satisfying seeing a well-loved system feel solid in the hands again.

Today on the bench an iPhone 8 Plus that came in with a loose Taptic Engine, a shattered display, and a battery that had definitely seen better days. The vibration motor had backed itself loose inside the housing, so it was removed, inspected, and properly secured back into place before moving on to the rest of the work. A new screen was installed and programmed to retain True Tone functionality, and the worn battery was replaced to restore stable performance and reliable daily use.

When multiple issues stack up like this, it is important to slow down and address each one properly. A phone should feel solid in the hand, respond the way it was designed to, and leave the bench better than it arrived.

Today on the bench a beautiful red dragon themed custom controller from SCUF Gaming that came in completely unresponsive. After diagnostics it turned out there was a short on the data lines, which had taken out the main board.

The damaged board was replaced and upgraded with new TMR joysticks for improved precision and longevity. Everything was carefully soldered, aligned, and tested to make sure signal integrity was solid across the data traces. Once reassembled and fully calibrated, it was tracking perfectly and ready to get back into competitive play.

Custom gear like this deserves proper board-level work. When you invest in a controller built to perform, it’s worth repairing it the right way.

Today on the bench a shaver that wouldn’t charge. On initial inspection everything looked fine externally, but under the microscope the issue revealed itself. The charging IC had a tiny solder ball sitting where it definitely didn’t belong, creating an intermittent fault on the power management line.

After carefully removing the board, shielding nearby components, and applying controlled heat with flux to reflow the charging IC, the stray solder re-set properly into the joint. Once cooled and cleaned, the board went back together and the shaver immediately began charging as expected.

Board-level faults like this are a good reminder that sometimes the problem isn’t a failed component, but a microscopic imperfection. With the right tools and a steady hand, even something that small can be corrected properly.

Today on the bench a PS5 that was overheating and shutting itself down mid game. After a full teardown the root cause was clear. The liquid metal had pooled to one side of the APU, leaving a visible dry spot on the die that you can see in the pictures. With uneven coverage, heat transfer suffers quickly and the system protects itself by powering off.

I removed the old liquid metal, carefully cleaned and inspected the APU surface, rebuilt the containment barrier, and applied a fresh, even layer before reseating the heatsink with proper torque. While inside, I also replaced all of the thermal pads on the RAM and SSD ICs to ensure consistent contact and proper heat dissipation across the board. The cooling assembly and fan were fully cleaned to restore unrestricted airflow.

After reassembly and stress testing, temperatures leveled out and the console ran stable under load. Repairs like this are a good reminder that precision matters. A small imbalance in thermal transfer can create big problems.

Today on the bench an Apple Watch Series 6 in for a battery replacement after struggling to hold a charge through the day. The original cell was heavily worn and starting to swell slightly, which is common at this age. After carefully heating and separating the display, I disconnected the fragile flex cables, removed the expanded battery, and installed a fresh replacement. A new adhesive seal was applied during reassembly to ensure everything sat flush and secure.

Smartwatches pack a lot into a very small space. Precision matters here, especially when working around the display and force touch gasket. When done properly, the watch feels untouched and performs the way it should.

Today on the bench a MacBook Pro with a swollen battery that had started putting pressure on the lower case and trackpad. After safely removing the degraded cells, I carefully cleaned away all of the original adhesive to make sure the new pack would sit perfectly flat and secure. A fresh battery was installed and properly seated, restoring both safety and reliable runtime.

While it was open, I also replaced the full set of keycaps. The originals were heavily worn and starting to go translucent from years of use. Swapping them out gave the keyboard a crisp, uniform feel again and brought the overall look of the machine back in line with how it performs.

Battery work like this is about more than capacity. It is about protecting the device from further damage and making sure everything is reassembled cleanly and correctly. Attention to detail makes all the difference.
