Clients often ask why aerial LiDAR and air photo projects can experience delays, but airborne data acquisition depends on a complex combination of weather, visibility, cloud cover, wind, turbulence, sun angle, and safe flying conditions.

Flying contractors are constantly balancing aircraft safety, collection efficiency, and data quality to ensure the final deliverables meet project specifications. Pilots, sensor operators, and project managers closely monitor forecast models, winds, precipitation, and cloud conditions in real time to make informed go/no-go decisions for each mission.

Sometimes delays are simply the result of waiting for the right conditions to safely collect accurate, high-quality data. If you need support planning aerial data acquisition, feel free to reach out - we’re always happy to answer questions. Email: [email protected]

Fun Fact Friday! 🤓 Did you know the world’s first aerial photograph was taken from a hot air balloon?

In 1858, a daring photographer floated high above Paris with his camera - capturing a bird’s-eye view at a time when flight itself was still a novelty. No drones, no planes… just a balloon, some serious courage, and a passion for innovation.

It’s wild to think that every breathtaking aerial shot you see today traces back to that one bold moment in the sky. 🌍

Spring weather in Alberta doing what it does best - keeping everyone guessing. This past weekend is a good reminder of why aerial acquisition projects in Western Canada demand flexibility. It’s also peak season for one of the industry’s biggest challenges: leaf-off imagery.

While “leaf-off” sounds simple in theory, in practice it’s a narrow and often frustrating window:

• Late snow or sudden storms
• Cloud cover limiting flight days
• Strong winds grounding aircraft and affecting data quality
• Rapid green-up once temperatures rise

In Alberta, that window can open and close in a matter of days. Staying flexible and ready to act when conditions align is critical.
For clients, that can mean reassessing priorities - waiting for ideal leaf-off conditions, shifting acquisition to the fall, or proceeding with summer imagery.

At Tarin Resource Services, we help navigate these realities with adaptable plans and contingency strategies to make the most of narrow seasonal windows.

Today, we celebrate World LiDAR Day - a technology that has transformed how we see, measure, and understand the world around us. 🌍✨

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has become a cornerstone of modern surveying, mapping, environmental monitoring, mining, infrastructure development, and geospatial analysis. But its story began more than six decades ago.

In 1962, a team of researchers at Hughes Aircraft Company developed the first LiDAR system capable of measuring the distance between the system and a target object. Their groundbreaking system used a ruby laser to emit pulses of light, which reflected off a target and returned to the sensor. By measuring the time it took for the light to return, they could accurately calculate distance - laying the foundation for the high-precision spatial data technology we rely on today.

From those early experiments to today’s airborne, terrestrial, and mobile LiDAR platforms, the evolution has been extraordinary. Modern LiDAR systems can capture millions of points per second, generating detailed 3D models that support smarter decision-making across industries.

At Tarin Resource Services, we recognize the power of LiDAR in delivering accurate, efficient, and data-driven solutions for our clients. Whether supporting resource development, infrastructure planning, or environmental assessments, LiDAR continues to help us map the future with confidence.

Here’s to the innovation that changed geospatial science - and to the advancements still ahead. 🚀
