Read what the ancestors of today’s Batlhako, Bahurutshe, Barolong, Batlhware, Bafokeng, Bakgoro and Batlhokwa had to say in the 1930s and 1940s! Translated and presented in a bilingual volume, Setswana facing English, this book is perfect for anyone interested in Setswana or Batswana.
Volume 1 of the Setswana Writings with English Translations is the first of the bilingual Ancestral Voices series, and this is due in no small part to the sheer volume of writings in Setswana that are part of the collection. In the projected 9 volumes of Setswana Heritage Writings, there are three main contributors who stand out: Masiangoako, Mogorosi and Naoa. These authors have contributed more than 70% of all the writings in Setswana.
This first volume is a mixture of history, customs, a legend, and a collection of folktales.
The history covered is extensive, including accounts of the following groups of people: Batlhako, Bahurutshe, Barolong, Batlhware, Bafokeng, Bakgoro and Batlhokwa.
The customs mentioned concern birth and female initiation, and the legend is of the Lake at Tshakgolo.
The folktales, collected by J Masiangoako from the Bakgatla of Saulspoort, are titled “Mmutla, Khudu le Tau” (Hare, Tortoise and Lion), and are wonderful to read.
