This week's tech tip: turn on multi-factor authentication for every admin account in your business.

It blocks 99.9% of automated account attacks, and it takes about five minutes per account to set up. Most businesses that skip it aren't avoiding the hassle, they just haven't gotten to it yet.

Consider this your reminder.

A new AI training suite launched this month teaches coding agents to avoid the vulnerabilities found in thousands of real-world security incidents, a sign that even the AI industry knows speed without security just moves the risk downstream.

AI-assisted development can move fast. It still needs engineers who know what a vulnerability looks like before it ships, not after.

Every build we deliver gets reviewed by people who know exactly what to check for, whether AI wrote the first draft or not.

Are you asking your dev partner how they catch what the AI misses?

Off-the-shelf software makes you adapt your business to fit the tool. Custom-built software is designed around how your business actually operates: your compliance requirements, your territories, your workflow.

That difference is why custom builds tend to last longer and need less workaround duct tape a year in. It's not a bigger template. It's software shaped around your operation from the start.

That's the approach behind every platform we've built, including our own, TriblockHR.

What's your team currently working around instead of working with?

Time to hire a senior developer has nearly doubled since 2024, now sitting around 90 days. Entry-level hiring has dropped 73% in the same stretch.

Building an in-house engineering team right now means competing for a shrinking pool of senior talent, while the junior talent that's easier to find often can't run a project end to end on its own.

Working with an established regional partner means you skip the search. We already have the senior engineers, and we've been delivering with them for six years.

Still trying to hire your way out of this? There's a faster path.

Three questions worth asking before you hire an IT firm: Have you delivered this exact type of project before? Who owns the code and the systems when the contract ends? What happens after launch?

If a firm can't answer all three clearly and specifically, that's worth noticing before you sign anything.

Six years and 60+ Caribbean clients later, we can answer all three: real organizations, real delivery, real ownership handed to the client.

What would your current or prospective IT partner say to these three?

The Bahamas has a data protection law and a regulator, but very little enforcement power. Jamaica passed its law five years ago and still hasn't activated the enforcement provisions.

Weak enforcement doesn't mean weak risk. Customers and partners still expect their data handled properly, regulation or not. Building that in now costs less than retrofitting it later.

That's the approach behind every platform we build.

Is your data handling ready for regulation that's still catching up?

If your team is retyping the same information from one system into another, your systems aren't integrated. They're just coexisting next to each other.

That gap costs time every single day, and it's usually where mistakes creep in: a typo here, a missed update there, a report that doesn't match because two systems fell out of sync.

System integration connects what you already have so data moves on its own. No duplicate entry. No gaps between departments.

How many systems is your team manually bridging right now?

Public cloud spending is projected to hit $850 billion this year, and wasted cloud spend just climbed to 29%, the highest it's been in five years.

Most of that waste isn't the cloud provider's fault. It's systems that were never architected with cost in mind in the first place. Fixing it after the invoice arrives is a lot more expensive than designing for it up front.

We build infrastructure with cost control built into the architecture, not bolted on afterward.

Curious what your cloud spend would look like with that approach?

Two of our engineers took the stage at this month’s Bahamas IT Professionals Association meeting, and we were proud to sponsor the room they did it in.

Rian Saunders, our Chief Technology Officer, gave a show and tell on Potluck, the orchestration engine we built in-house to provision infrastructure for TriblockHR across AWS and Kubernetes, no terminal commands required.

Patrick Hanna, our Senior Software Developer, presented Laravel Warrant, a package he created that moves role and permission logic out of scattered policies and queries and compiles it straight to SQL.

This is the kind of engineering happening inside a Bahamian software company. Thank you to BITPA for having us.
