Reservoir Uncertainty and Development Strategy

Reservoir uncertainty is unavoidable in offshore concept screening. The real question is how much of that uncertainty space you can evaluate, and how quickly.

FLOCO® was built for exactly this. Engineers define a reservoir scenario and run it through an integrated techno-economic workflow, Wells, Subsea, Flow Assurance, Topside Facilities, Production Units, and Finance, with P10, P50, and P90 covered end to end. It's how concept-stage decisions get made when the goal is to move fast across a wide design space.

When a Petrel model is already part of the project, the FLOCO Petrel Integrator brings that simulation physics and production curves directly into the same workflow. The runs are organized as a structured VFP-based dataset, that covers the project's design space and then serves as the reservoir source that FLOCO draws from as facilities inputs vary downstream.

The screening environment becomes elastic: anchored to simulation physics, broad across the uncertainty envelope, and responsive to whatever concept the engineering team puts in front of it, without asking them to run a single additional case.

Subsurface and facilities, working from the same simulator-derived data. That is what integrated concept-phase decision making should look like.

Offshore Concept Screening Straight from Petrel

Reservoir simulation and concept screening have always lived in different tools, run by different teams, on different timelines. The FLOCO Petrel Integrator closes that gap: simulation results from Petrel now flow directly into offshore project and concept screening, surfacing economic and development KPIs without anyone leaving the environment they already work in.

For reservoir engineers, that means seeing how a model choice in Petrel lands as an economic outcome, not weeks later in a separate report, but in the same session. For concept engineers, it means working with reservoir behavior at the resolution Petrel actually delivers, rather than the simplified curves that usually make it across the handoff.

The simulation outputs feed FLOCO Copilot, our intelligence layer. Copilot ingests the curves, applies QC, orchestrates scenarios, and generates development concepts: well trajectories, subsea layout, surface facilities, and economic assumptions, all populated by AI and validated by the engineer. The engineer stays in the loop where judgment matters; the routine assembly work doesn't slow things down.

The result is that field development decisions get made on the same numbers, by the same engineering organization, with full traceability between subsurface assumptions and concept outputs. No reconciliation meetings. No version drift. One thread from reservoir model to investment case.

Offshore projects accumulate decades of data in formats nobody planned for: scanned PDFs, inspection video files, logs in obsolete formats, ArcGIS exports, handwritten notes digitized into TIFFs.

When operators revisit brownfield options or evaluate decommissioning strategies, this unstructured archive is often the most valuable information source and the hardest to use.

FLOCO Copilot’s ingestion pipeline is designed to handle the full range: structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.

What’s the most challenging data format your team has dealt with in a project data room?

API-first integration.
Every module communicates through OpenAPI standards. Third-party software and your internal systems all connect through the same API layer used by our own modules.

Client-defined storage.
Processing runs directly against your storage endpoints. When a session ends, there is nothing to retrieve from our side because nothing is stored. A platform that respects data ownership earns trust.

Have you encountered platforms that claimed to have an “open architecture” but still relied on proprietary formats underneath?

Where does my data live?
- If the platform stores your engineering data on its own servers, you have a dependency.
- Look for client-controlled data residency. Your files stay in your cloud or on-premises environment, and the platform accesses them only when processing is required.

Can I replace individual components?
- A monolithic platform means upgrading one module often requires upgrading everything on the vendor’s timeline and roadmap.
- A microservices architecture lets you swap, update, or add components independently.

What format goes in and comes out?
- Proprietary formats create switching costs.
- Open APIs and standardized protocols (like the OEDP we’re developing) keep your data portable, not captive.

These aren’t theoretical concerns. We hear them directly from the industry. The answers should be verifiable, not aspirational.

Would you add a fourth question? Curious to know what your team prioritizes most.

Most offshore teams have plenty of tools. What they don’t have is a way to connect those tools without handing all their data to a single vendor.

OffshoreStudio AI was built with a different assumption: your team should be able to walk away at any point without losing control of what you built.

Here's how the architecture reflects that:

Data ownership is structural, not a policy. No raw inputs or outputs are stored in our environment. Processing runs against your own infrastructure: AWS, Azure, or on-premises. Control isn't promised. It's built in.

Modules are independent by design. Each engineering module deploys separately and connects through APIs. You can swap, add, or remove any module without touching the rest of the workflow.

Orchestration without lock-in. OffshoreStudio AI doesn't replace the tools your team already uses. It connects them with governance, traceability, and version control across disciplines.

When evaluating any digital platform, one question cuts through most of the noise: what happens to our data and workflows if we stop using it?

That question is worth asking before procurement, not after.

Spreadsheets aren’t the problem. They’re a symptom. The real issue is the absence of a structured environment that connects reservoir, wells, subsea, topside facilities, production units, and economics into a single governed workflow.

When a concept selection team evaluates development alternatives, spreadsheets feel like the obvious choice. They're flexible, familiar, and fast. That may work on a small scale.

It breaks down quickly. Try comparing 200 architecture alternatives across six disciplines. Try tracing which assumption changed between version 14 and version 17. Try auditing who approved the switch from FPSO to semisubmersible in the cost model.

Spreadsheets don’t fail because they lack capability. They fail from lack of governance: no version control, no approval gates, no cross-disciplinary validation, no traceability.

That's the gap OffshoreStudio AI fills. Not as a spreadsheet replacement, but as the backbone underneath, orchestrating how engineering modules interact, maintaining a full audit trail while doing it.

How much of your concept study time goes into managing spreadsheets versus doing actual engineering?
