⚙️ WHEN STANDARD HARDWARE ISN'T ENOUGH ⚙️
Recently, we had the opportunity to develop a highly specialized workstation solution for a new customer operating in the professional control room industry. Our customer specializes in designing and installing complete control room environments, including both hardware and software integration.
The application itself will probably look familiar. The cameras you see every day across cities, municipalities, parking facilities and other environments continuously generate large amounts of video footage. All of these feeds are centralized within a control room, where they are processed and displayed across multiple monitors.
For exactly this type of application, we were asked to develop a workstation that combines a rather unique set of requirements: compact dimensions, high reliability, plenty of processing power, and the ability to fully utilize multiple professional PCIe expansion cards.
In practice, things quickly became a lot more interesting. Within the required compact form factor, conventional desktop platforms started reaching their limits in terms of expansion capabilities and available PCIe bandwidth.
And that's exactly where custom engineering begins for us. 🔧
Instead of making compromises or selecting a standard configuration that almost meets the requirements, we started with the application itself and engineered the right platform around it.
The result? A compact, purpose built FENN workstation, developed in two configurations depending on the final application:

🔹 32GB DDR5 5600MHz memory
🔹 Samsung Gen5 NVMe storage
🔹 Multiple professional PCIe expansion capabilities
🔹 Optimized airflow & cooling for long term operation
Compact on the outside, with quite a bit of engineering underneath. ⚡
Our work doesn't stop at the hardware either. Every workstation is fully prepared by our team using sysprep and equipped with Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC. No unnecessary applications and as few unnecessary background services as possible, just a clean OS environment focused on stability, predictability and long-term professional deployment.
📦 This means our customer doesn't receive a system that still requires extensive preparation, but a ready-to-integrate hardware platform. Their own software environment can be deployed immediately, after which the workstation is ready for installation at the end customer's site.
And that's exactly the kind of project we love working on at FENN Systems: not starting from what's readily available, but from what the application actually requires.
