Next week in Barcelona, intoPIX is presenting JPEG XS for Onboard Image Compression in Space Systems at the 10th On-board Payload Data Compression Workshop ( ).
Space imagers keep capturing more: higher resolution, more spectral bands, faster frame rates. Yet inside the payload, much of that data still travels uncompressed. Compression there has to be practically invisible: no added latency, no extra memory, and no change to the data that scientists and AI models rely on.
That's exactly what JPEG XS was designed for:
✔️ Excellent image quality, for the human eye as well as for science and AI (Near-Lossless: 4-10x less data)
✔️ Already flying, with a JPEG XS encoder deployed in a multispectral satellite payload
✔️ A complement to the CCSDS standards
✔️ An evolving ISO standard, open to new tools for space applications
In our 20-minute talk, we'll share our raw Bayer workflow, multispectral and hyperspectral coding, and first results on PhiSat-2 and PlanetScope imagery.
